Mission - Matt & Rose
From as far as he could tell, so far the teams hadn’t run into any creatures that were deemed too dangerous. Of course they were dangerous, and Matt knew that anything could happen even with the simplest of creatures, but he was thankful so far that they hadn’t run into any future predators of any kind. He’d seen enough of those blasted beasts for ten lifetimes, and Atlantis was the last place they needed to take residence. The ones they had seen had either been taken care of and sent back to their proper times or... were being prepared to bring back to Atlantis like the four Ditodons that had been located. He’d already been referring to two of them as Sid and Nancy thanks to the ones Connor had taken in when they’d gotten stuck in the present time back in London. He was sure Becker would be just thrilled about their stowaways.
He was conducting a search of the area to make sure there weren’t any additional surprises waiting for them, but he was also doing double duty and doing his daily check in with all of the other teams stationed in the area. HIs EMD was tucked underneath his arm as he finished the message and was putting his device away just about the time he heard movement nearby. In hardly a moment, the gun was aimed and ready to fire. He was about to turn around when he brushed up against what he thought was a tree at first but with the growl from above, Matt looked up to see none other than a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Immediately, he aimed and fired the gun, but the blast was from a bad angle and didn’t hit the dinosaur square in the chest. He darted away and started running back towards the direction of the last anomaly he’d seen that he was almost certain led back to the Cretaceous period. The T-Rex must have come through somehow before they’d locked the anomaly.
“T-Rex came through and is on the loose,” he said through the radio. “Need the Cretaceous anomaly reopened now.” He turned back to see the dinosaur coming after him. Good. The creature needed to go home.
Running quickly through the woods, Matt could still hear the dinosaur’s feet pounding against the ground with each step and the occasional roar; every time it sounded as if it was getting closer and closer. “I need the status on the anomaly,” Matt barked through the radio. A garbled response came through that they almost had the anomaly reopened.
He spotted the familiar shimmer of an anomaly up ahead and turned back to see how far away the T-Rex was. Matt had the advantage of being able to dodge trees easier, so he slowed his pace until the animal wasn’t too far behind him. He didn’t want to risk it not following him all the way and they’d lose their window.
As soon as he was barely a few feet away from the anomaly, Matt dodged to the left. His quick movement didn’t allow the T-Rex to correct himself, and he disappeared into the anomaly. He soon heard another roar coming back towards them, and he yelled out, “Close it now!” With a few clicks of the device, the locking device sealed the anomaly just in time before the T-Rex was able to escape.
With a sigh, Matt leaned over on his knees to catch his breath. Out-running a T-Rex tired out a guy pretty quickly. He was about to tell the team that they needed to move on when he heard the sound of wings above his head. Looking up, he saw four small green creatures flying above. One soon settled down on the ground in front of him and looked up at him with almost a familiarity.
“You’re not…” This was impossible. “Rex?” Matt said to the Coelurosauravus. The creature spun around once in a circle on the ground then flew up and did the same above his head, flying around in a circle twice before setting down back on the ground. With the anomaly closing, Matt scratched his head then laughed lightly. “Well, I guess you four are coming home with us.
The differences and similarities in the ways she and Matt moved amused Rose, partly because wandering around while important could get boring, and partly because she was learning about all the people she was on a the mission with. Hope was young, but very talented, Donald was a little bit of an enigma, Anthony was still a mystery to her and Matt, well she respected him, and knew him the best out of the crew.
Strolling alongside Matt, Rose looked casual, almost bored, but she was hyper-aware of everything around them. To an outsider, it probably looked like she wasn’t paying attention to anything at all. “Do you hear that?” She said after a good twenty minutes of walking in silence. There was a strange sound, music, but it wasn’t anything Rose had ever heard before.
Anytime Matt went on a patrol, he always felt on edge. It was like he was waiting for something to jump out at him, and old habits die hard. His EMD was held securely and at the ready for anything that came at them. He and Rose walked in silence for a while, but he paused when she seemed to hear something. At first he expected to hear the familiar sounds of a creature approaching but instead he heard music. Frowning, he exchanged a look with her and nodded then motioned for them to keep going. Their steps were made more quietly, and he raised the gun ready to shoot. The further they went, the louder the music became. They reached a clearing, and Matt saw five small people playing music. In a coconut.
“What in the bloody hell..” he muttered and looked at Rose. Not even he had seen anything like this before.
There were a lot of things that they could expect to see, small people in a coconut where far from what she expected. Rose had run down a list of what kind of people might be playing music and what it might mean if they ran into them.
Lowering her weapon just a little bit her eyebrows knitted together as she looked from them to Matt. It was unsettling in the way she didn’t believe what she was seeing.
“I don’t know,” she said to Matt but casually took a few steps towards them. The music still played as she took a few steps closer. “Who do you think they are?” She whispered looking over at Matt, as she did the music stopped and a flash of light emerged she raised her weapon but the little people were running through an anomaly. Before she could really react they were gone.
“Do you know of people who create their own anomalies?”
“I’ve no idea.” He’d seen a lot come in and out of anomalies, but nothing ever quite like this. His eyes widened while watching the anomaly appear and the people disappear through it. As for if he’d seen people create anomalies…. Matt hesitated in his answer but still kept a neutral face. After a moment, he nodded. “Yes, I’ve seen it happen. There were devices that were created with the ability to open anomalies to any designated year, both in the past and the future. Though, I’ve never seen or heard of anyone that was able to create them without the device.”
He hadn’t seen anyone with the device like he’d seen Abby and Connor come back to present-day London with during their first encounter. The issue there though was that it didn’t always function properly due to some damage it had taken during their year in distant past.
With the people now gone but the anomaly still open, Matt stepped forward cautiously, curious as to what waited on the other side. “We probably ought to try to get this one locked so nothing else comes through.”
“But it is possible?” Rose frowned thinking of the possibilities of what that would mean, especially if it fell into the wrong hands. Her mind was running wild with what COS could do with something like that.
Rose was more curious about what was on the other side of it, more small people playing music in coconuts, was it the future? Past? Some other world altogether? She almost suggested sending in a drone first and paused in her reaction. She nodded and took the pack she had on off pulling out what they’d need to close it with. “Are you sure you want to close it so fast?” She couldn’t help herself. Curiosity winning out.
Matt nodded. “It's possible.” He hadn't seen it done in ages, and unless Helen Cutter had made it to Atlantis, he wasn't sure who else would be playing with them. Abby and Connor knew better. Or at least he hoped that they would.
Normally, the policy was the no one went through the anomalies. That had been the case ever since he'd take over after Abby, Connor, and Danny had all been lost. Occasionally, Matt went against that rule for reasons he would rather not think about, but he couldn't help but be curious this time. Raising his weapon, he gave Rose a nod and started towards the anomaly. “Come on.”
He approached it slowly and cautiously. They had no way of knowing what was on the other side. As he started to step through, he made a note to most likely leave this out of his final mission report to Becker.
Suppressing a smirk she nodded and followed Matt through the anomaly, she’d never travelled by one before and it had a strange pulling sensation as they entered a whole new world. Strangely enough it looked like the same clearing but there were a lot more bright colors and things almost seemed technicolor.
Rose looked around in awe.
Once they were through, Matt looked around. This was unlike any other anomaly he’d ever been through, and he wasn’t sure if that was a good or a bad thing. Now he wished he had one of the devices that could tell him where or when exactly they were.
“I don’t see any of them anywhere, do you?” He asked her. They started walking down towards the edge of the clearing towards the tree line. So far they seemed to be the only ones around, but looks could be very deceiving.
“Have you ever seen anything like this?” Rose asked as she paused bending down to look at what looked like an orchid, as she did a little person ran down one of the petals, jumping back Rose held up her hand. “Sorry,” she spoke softly. “I didn’t,” before she could get another word out the little person opened an anomaly and disappeared.
Matt stopped and turned, about ready to answer Rose when she jumped back. His eyes widened when he saw the anomaly open. He stepped back towards her but before he could reach the orchid, the anomaly had closed and any evidence was gone.
“No,” he replied. “I’ve never seen anything like this.” It was like the person was able to open and close them at will. All his life he’d been taught about the cycle of the anomalies and how they were a natural occurrence leading up to the Convergence. The devices had been developed to be able to open them up, but that was rare and no one was able to do so without the device in hand. “We probably ought not to venture too far away,” Matt said. “Anomalies can start to close without much warning.” This was certainly no place he wanted to get stuck.
Just then, though, he heard the sound of the same music being played just over a hill. He gave Rose a look and shrugged, and both of them started to see if the same little men were on the other side.
Rose looked between Matt and where the anomaly went. She was tempted to take a sample of, well, anything but decided against it. She bent down again just to look and she couldn’t see anything that gave any clue. She couldn’t see anything but anomalies weren’t her skill set.
Matt was speaking about not going too far when the music started up again. “Think they’ll stick around this time?” It was wishful hoping.
Matt raised a brow and shrugged a bit. “Not likely, but we can check it out.” They began walking over the hill and as soon as they were at the top, he spotted what looked like the same number of strange little people that had been on the other side of the anomaly on the island. They were playing the music just the same inside the coconuts, but the difference was that there was a large structure behind them that looked almost like a temple with a couple statues erected in front of it. “I’m not sure about us going to any future or past that I’ve heard of unless this is some sort of Atlantis version of the past.” It certainly wasn’t one from earth’s past.
“Or the future,” Rose responded as she looked around spotting some strange looking birds, at least she thought they were birds. She wasn’t sure what they were going to find here but she also knew they had three people at home base still and getting stuck in whatever land this was didn’t sound smart. She glanced down at her watch.
“I’d much rather explore, but think we should be getting back? I don’t think they’re a danger to us or the mission.” Something told her they were peaceful.
“That’s entirely possible too especially since we know there are multiple futures of Atlantis to choose from.” Although, given the vibrancy of their surroundings, he would venture to guess that they weren’t in the third future where they lost the war.
Doing the same and checking his own watch, Matt nodded. “We should. Staying here too long puts us at risk of staying here forever.” Unless they ended up being able to convince any of the little men to make them an anomaly to go home.
“Let’s start heading back, and we can check in with everyone else. We might be able to research Atlantis’ past once the mission is over.”
“As bright as it is, not sure I want to be stuck here,” smirking she shrugged as they started to head back over the hill. When they came in sight of the anomaly it was wavering a bit.
“Shit,” she muttered looking over at Matt with well guess we better run expression. She didn’t wait for his response as she took off towards the anomaly. As she ran she just thought about what it would be like to be trapped somewhere like this.
Matt shared the look with Rose and without any hesitation, they both started running towards the anomaly. He could see it starting to fade even as they ran, but thankfully for everyone’s sake they passed through in time. A few seconds after they emerged on the other side back onto the island, the anomaly closed on its own.
“We can leave the close call portion out of our mission reports,” he said with a small smile after catching his breath. That wasn’t a conversation he wanted to have once he got back to base. Besides, they were fine, and they’d been able to gather some decent information. There were creatures who could open anomalies on their own as if it was part of their natural abilities. That alone was worth knowing.
Matt nodded towards base camp. “We should get back and check in.”
Rose watched as the anomaly closed with a an almost wishful feeling. Turning to look at Matt when he told her they could leave it out of the report she smirked. “You’re the boss here,” she raised her eyebrows with a shrug.
“Hopefully, we didn’t miss anything important,” she said falling into step with him.
