Gwen's room • Late evening
PG • Complete Finally talking to each other and making a decision |
Jack knocked on the door and took a step back, waiting for Gwen to answer. Ever since she'd returned and Anwen had gone back to live with her, he'd been a frequent visitor at their flat. But the pair of them had still managed to avoid talking about what was really bothering them both, instead dancing around that old familiar line instead of crossing it. "Open up, PC. Need to talk to you about something."
Gwen opened the door and had Anwen on the couch, playing with her tablet. "Baby, Jack's here--" Laughing, watching her daughter's excitement as she flew to the other room and put on her best for Jack. "C'mon in, it's open, flyboy," brushing her hair to the side, cleaning up Anwen's mess so Sara wouldn't be flooded in her daughter's stuff. He grinned as he stepped inside, giving a little wave to Anwen before she ran off. "Hey... so... how's things?" he asked, knowing he sounded like an idiot. "I just wanted to stop by and see how you two were. And Anwen left this at my place," he said, holding up the small plush toy." "Crazy, it's been crazy. I am trying to indulge in spoiling Anwen and I guess we got another bloody mission to go back into soon enough. I am grumpy as hell, I doubt I can opt out of going into battle once again. We'll see, but generally I'm kinda handling things better than I did," Gwen smiling, waving him to the couch. "Anwen, come back out. He has your teddy!" Watching the girl bolt out in a spring dress, arms out towards Jack. Jack arched an eyebrow and asked, "Why the fashion show, kiddo? You looked fine in your jeans and t-shirt." He scooped Anwen up before sitting down on the couch and playfully bopped her nose with the toy. "I'm trying not to think about mission at the moment. That last one was a giant mess, despite the eventual outcome." "Because! I can!" Anwen answered, snuggling up to Jack without even a word of complaint as he lifted her and sat down. "Yeah, me neither. I figured I might just rebel and stay here. Who knows, I just know I rather stay back with Anwen and hold down the fort. So. What's up, sweetheart?" Sitting next to him, kissing her daughter's nose. "Oh really?" Once she was settled, Jack looped his arms loosely around Anwen's waist and smiled warmly. He blinked when Gwen called him sweetheart and for several moments, kept his gaze on Anwen and her bear. "Everything that's happened lately... I've been doing some thinking. I never expected what happened on that mission to ever actually happen. With you, I mean. No matter what, you always came through with flying colors and I promised I wouldn't let anything happen to you," Jack said quietly. "I screwed up, Gwen. And because of it, we nearly lost you. Hell... we did lose you for a while." "You didn't screw up, life happened and I managed to get caught in a tangle. I don't hold it against you, Jack. I could never. I try to come through for you as much as possible because I deeply care for you. That's what people do for those who care. You always come through for them. Just like you do for me. Since being here? You have been there for me. Even Anwen, which I was thankful for. I wasn't ready to swallow the thought of death." Gwen said, unable to consume any thought that she was dead, honestly. Kissing Jack's cheek, she smiled. "I didn't mind watching Anwen." Jack hugged the little girl and grinned as he leaned in and asked, "Right kiddo? You had fun spending a couple of days with Uncle Jack while your mum got better." He looked back to Gwen and let go of Anwen, lifting his arm and inviting her to shift over. "Losing you scared the hell out of me," he admitted. "It hurt when we lost the others... Tosh, Owen, and... and Ianto. But you, Gwen... it nearly broke me." Getting close to Jack, Gwen snuggled up and leaned her face onto his shoulder. "I know, anytime something happens to you, it's like I feel it. I feel all of it. It's a shake of nerves telling me something is wrong. Like we're connected in a way I can't describe. You and I, we're great, huh?" Gwen smiled a bit, it was always them. Just them, at one point, and Gwen wouldn't let him go. Nodding in agreement, Jack pressed a kiss to Gwen's forehead. "It's been like that for years with me and the Gwen from my universe. And now with you too. When I got back from the mission, I spent an evening with Gene, Alex, and Anwen. Gene and Alex told me more about how things were with you and the Jack in Daytona." Oh. So they explained and there was a twinge of nerves hitting her heart, at least he didn't get freaked out too much and run away after hearing about this Jack. "Oh, so you guys all met and talked about Daytona, huh? Crazy times, honestly. I loathed most of my time there solely because the locals were out for blood. Anwen was always terrified unless Gene and Alex were around, honestly. Or Jack. But I just hope you'll always stick nearby. I don't want to let you go...." Jack leaned in and pressed his lips to hers, cutting Gwen off in mid-sentence as he kissed her. "Alex said that everyone deserves a chance and suggested that I don't waste it. So... This is me asking for my chance." Blinking and didn't jerk back, actually leaning into the kiss and smiled. "Oh my god, thank god this is where this is going because of course you're going to get your chance, I care so much for you and its time that we finally have our time without anything getting in the way of us. Not a single thing can take you from me." "I know I'm not him. But in a way, I sort am, I guess. But the point I'm making is that it's still those same feelings as when I was home. Except here, things are different. You and Rhys aren't together and you know how much I care about you and Anwen." Jack looked down at the little girl curled up on his lap. "You okay with this?" he asked her. "God, I am so glad you didn't run away from me when you heard about Daytona. I am relieved as all hell. You are Jack Harkness, though. No matter what universe you are from, you are my best friend and my... everything, really. I am your carer, as I can really describe it. I just want you to always be here with me and I always want you. You've got me, Jack," Giving him another kiss, Anwen giggled and kissed Jack's cheek. "Yes! Yes yes yes yes, Uncle Jack!" Jack grinned and ruffled Anwen's hair. "Good. But no more throwing candy and baking junk at me. It took forever to get that crap out of my hair and I felt sticky even after showering!" he complained to the kid. "As for you, you know I'll always be here for you. I promise. I'm not losing you again, Gwen Cooper." "Aw!" There was a very loud pout coming from Anwen, one that Gwen couldn't help but laugh at. "Yeah, I think you need to stop throwing that stuff at Jack. I think I still find sprinkles in Jack's hair, baby girl!" Teasing her daughter, turning back to Jack with a giant grin. "Good, that's a promise i'll forever hold you to, Jack Harkness. You know I will always hold you to it. I just... wish we could get switched for roommates so I don't have to always worry about if Anwen wakes up Sara. She tends to want to play with Sara, it's a not problem unless Anwen wakes up at 5am and I feel bad for poor Sara." "She's always welcome to have a sleepover at my place," he offered. "Or Alex loved having her over. Her and Gene have a flat of their own now that they're engaged." Considering how long he'd been away for the last mission, Jack had barely interacted with his roommate at all. "I think she'll adore sleeping over at your place, even with Alex and Gene as well. I know for sure I was missing her, but I also knew Alex loves having her and Gene's a total softy for her... so I like leaving her with them so they can all bond together for a bit," Sending Anwen to go play with her legos, she turned back to Jack. "Wow, long time coming, huh? Takes me dying and coming back, finally appreciating everything more and more. I can tell you I am appreciative for you giving us a chance, too." "Like I said, losing you and taking care of Anwen by myself for those couple of days gave me a lot of time to think about everything." Jack lightly brushed his lips against her temple. "I'm not missing our chance this time." "Anwen seemed refreshed after that, too. Which helps, I think I was more terrified of her reaction and having you around after I came out of my hiding spot? It helped as well. I am just overall relieved." Gwen leaned her face onto him, allowing him to kiss her temple. "Yeah, me neither." "You and me against the world. Well... You, me, and Anwen," he added with a soft laugh. Jack closed his eyes as he held Gwen in his arms, glad that he hadn't decided to go home after that disastrous mission. |
