Log: James & Sirius
He had grandkids. James had grandkids! And two of them were here, not to mention the fact that a nephew was here too! How exciting was that. He looked over at Sirius and grinned, lifting his beer up in a salute. "To family we never knew we had," he said, unable to keep the excitement out of his voice. Sirius lifted his beer, a matching grin on his face. "Never knew was possible," he agreed. He had come home from a rather uneventful mission to find twins. Hard to believe that he, long having sworn off continuing the family tree, had had children. Albeit not the sort of children who would have made his mother proud, but children nevertheless. "Who knew we could be so lucky? Well, besides us, I guess." "Oh I don't know," James was saying, a drop in his tone that he didn't want to think about, but that was because he didn't want to think about the thing that he was, well, thinking about. "Luck is what brought us here, really. Gave us this chance, huh?" Sirius's expression darkened, aware of what James wasn't saying. "Yea, it did," he said. "I'd say that makes us lucky...even if the future's complete shite back home. Look what it brought us here. You, Lils, Marly, the kids…Julia. The future here is going to be great, if only to make up for everything we have to go through back home." James took a drink and nodded. "Exactly. Not about to look a gift horse in the mouth and all that," he blathered on for a moment, shrugging. "We've got what we need here and we're all going to enjoy it, even if it makes no sense whatsoever and my infant son is older than I am." He gave a grin and a laugh. "That's one that's still making my head ache." "You're telling me," said Sirius, with a laugh. "I went on a mission and came back to grown twins. I'm still trying to work that one out." He'd enjoyed getting to know Hope and Eliot though, which was a point in Atlantis's favor as far as he was concerned. "I hope the future version of you gives brilliant parenting advice, by the way. Since you'll likely be a real grandfather by then, what with Harry being older than both of us and all." James's eyes almost bulged out and he shook his head. "No," he said, "no no no no. I'm not thinking about grandkids, at least, none more than the ones that showed up here from our original timeline and definitely nothing about any that might come out of this timeline." "Relax," said Sirius, nudging James's arm, "Harry will make a great father. He's got --" He paused, stopping short of saying you. That wasn't strictly speaking accurate, especially not for the Harry of their own timeline. "All of us to look back on. Surely, one of us must be a good influence?" James thought about it for the moment before he laughed a little. "Remus. Remus had to have been a good influence, right?" After all, James had been dead and Sirius had been - well, it was honestly easier for James to think about himself being dead than to think of where Sirius had ended up. "Remus? What makes you think he isn't holed up in the highlands, worrying about everything?" Sirius meant it good naturedly. Remus was, after all, his...boyfriend? Future life partner? That made his head spin. He'd only just started seeing Remus (and Julia), and now they had children together. "But from what I know, he ended up being a pretty good professor. So, yes, Remus, absolutely. For a little bit, at least. Merlin, our lives really our shit." James put a hand to his forehead and shook his head, almost vehemently. "Shit, yes," he said. "But look, we're here and here our lives are definitely not shit. Right?" "Right," said Sirius, "so, let's call that an even trade?" He didn't know if that counted. Nothing that happened in the universe would transfer to their own, as far as he was aware. So, even if they lived out their lives here, there'd still be a world where they… Well, he didn't want to think about it either. "Look, we might not have been there, but I'd say Harry turned out alright? Something must be working in our favor." James heaved a heavy sigh and nodded. "He's all that mattered," he said quietly, quickly. "In the end, you know?" Shit, he was probably going go get maudlin all of a sudden. "In those last moments, and I wanted was for him to stay safe. It's good to be here, and know that he did. So yeah, something was working in our favor." Sirius nodded. He understood, even if he didn't entirely understand. He hadn't been there on that night, and if he had been, he didn't know if he'd have been able to do anything. "Yea, of course," he said, "we'd have all done the same." He let a beat pass. "How about another round?" He didn't know if he was drinking to forget or to celebrate, but he figured it didn't much matter either way. A drink was a drink was a drink. "Another round sounds excellent," he said, slapping Sirius - his best mate - on the shoulder. "And then tomorrow we can go back to not thinking about how weird our lives have suddenly become!" "I'll drink to that," he agreed with a laugh. |
