James barely waited for Sirius to open the door to his apartment and greet him before he blurted out, “Okay, so you’re my best friend in the whole wide world, right? And you’d do absolutely anything for me?” He gave his best mate a wide-eyed, hopeful look and pushed past him to go into the apartment without being invited in. He figured Sirius wouldn't mind anyway. And if he did, this entire conversation wasn't going to go well at all.
Sirius was still holding the door as he turned to look at James. He'd got out of bed early for this, so whatever it was, it had better be good. He folded his arms across his chest, offering his best friend a wary look. "That's...a suspicious question, but within reason, yes?" He figured that whatever it was couldn't have been illegal, or so he hoped. And James had done him more than one favor over the years, he could manage one more. He grinned, nodding the moment Sirius agreed to do whatever it was he was about to ask him to do. "Good man, Padfoot," he said, slapping a hand against his back. "I knew I could count on you. Get your shoes on. We're going out." "A favor and a secret?" said Sirius, finding and pulling on a pair of well-worn motorcycle boots. Even suspicious as he was, he wasn't about to pass up a (possibly) good time. He found his jacket, too, and turned back to his best friend. "What's with all the mystery, Prongs?" "You'll see, mate," James said, ducking back out of the flat. "You'll see." He glanced back over his shoulder and grinned at Sirius. "You trust me, right?" "With my life," said Sirius, again, following James out of the flat. He made sure the door was locked before continuing after his friend. He returned James's grin. "This had better be worth all the secrecy." "No secrecy, not really," James said off-handedly, "just wanting to keep up the excitement. Got to keep us all on our toes, don't you think?" "Well, I'd say you're doing a brilliant job of that," said Sirius, walking alongside his friend. He was glad that he'd had the foresight to bring a jacket. It had been freezing all week in Atlantis, and it was looking likely to snow again that weekend. "You're practically the master of mysteries, dragging me out in this weather for the unknown… Moony and I will have to present you with some sort of award." "You know how I feel about awards," James quipped. He loved them. Give him a medal, a badge, a trophy. Yes, please. He grinned at Sirius. "It's not so bad out here. It's not a blizzard like it was the other day." When he'd found tiny Edmund in the snow and had to get him inside for hot cocoa. "Now, what is your favorite thing to do in the entire world?" "Not being a blizzard is barely an improvement." Sirius hated the cold, and he hated snow almost as much. He wished that it could be summer year round, or at the very least, a permanently long, warm season without responsibilities. "That's easy. My motorcycle, but it's not here. Someone'd have said so if it were." Drat, James thought. No, he didn't have Sirius's motorcycle and he probably should have thought of that before he asked the question. "Right, but what's the next best kipthing then?" "I can think of a couple things. Being an animagus, Quidditch, full moons." He looked at James with a grin. "None of those are right, are they?" "Quidditch is close," James said with a big grin. "Look, there's a lot of snow and you know what's the most fun to do when there's a lot of snow?" He didn't even give Sirius a chance to answer before he burst out with, "Sledding!!" Sirius laughed aloud. He hadn't imagined that James's plan would involve something quite so harmless. "Sledding?" Although it had been a few days since the blizzard, it was cold enough that some of the snow had stuck around. It was easily enough, combined with maybe a little magic, to make sledding manageable (or, at the very least, a failed attempt). "You're on." "Oh we're racing then?" James asked, a bounce entering his step as he even picked up the pace too. "I mean, of course we're racing. And you're going to lose, just like always." "I don't think so," said Sirius, following close behind. He was taller than James, which helped, but not nearly as athletic. "You know what they say about second place…" |
