While Kol’s life in Breckentale hadn’t been terrible, he was certainly thankful to be back to himself and back to living his life with the love of his life. Dating Taisia had been fun, and he did genuinely enjoy her company before the fantasy life and during it. He’d hoped to enjoy it after, but he still needed to find the time to speak with her. Not before he was able to speak with his fiancé, though. No, Davina was his priority, and he knew she wasn’t pleased with what all had happened when they weren’t quite themselves.
He expected her back soon, so he made sure to have a stir-fry ready by the time she arrived back home. For someone who didn’t have to eat regular food, he still could cook. He’d had plenty of time to learn a few things in the kitchen over the years. It was almost calming to him in some ways.
A few magic books were still laid out and open in the living room where he’d been working. He only had a handful of vague ideas of what might have been attributed to their most recent Atlantis adventure, but until he heard more of what she’d found, it was only speculation.
Hearing the door open up, Kol smiled to himself and popped out of the kitchen wearing a blue apron. “Hello, love. I couldn’t find one of these that said you had to kiss me,” he said, pointing to the apron “But I suppose it will have to do.”
If there was one thing that Davina was thankful for it was getting back to reality, or at least one version of it. She did not like the Breckentale adventure, sure, being normal wasn’t that bad, but she prefered her life, with her fiancé. Period.
Part of Davina wanted to be mad at Kol, he was with someone else, but she also knew that it wasn’t his fault. It just made Davina question things she’d never questions before, heck she almost decided to be late coming home because of it. Deciding against it she sighed opening the door to the smells in the kitchen.
“Kol!” Davina let out looking at him up and down as she opened and closed her mouth. “Come here,” she waved at him as she put down the books she had in her hands.
Unsure exactly how to take her exclamation, Kol reached back into the kitchen to put down the utensil he held in his hand and then walked across the room to stand in front of her. He gave a brief glance to the books she’d brought home and at titles. Some of them he recognized, some not.
“Yes, ma’am?” He asked coyly. He placed his hands on either of her shoulders and leaned in for a kiss. “Isn’t this what you always dreamed of as a girl? A handsome bloke and dinner on the table after a hard day?” He wriggled his eyebrows a bit at her.
Kissing him back she laughed with a shrug. “Actually I used to dream about taking over the world, and killing your brother.” Davina teased, when she was a little girl she just wanted to be normal it wasn’t until situations forced her to start seeing the world darker that she went through the power struggles, luckily she felt like she’d come out the other side of it. But, power was still nice. The killing Klaus part, well that was still true.
“And as much as I would like to take you out of your domestic look right now, I think we’ve got some stuff we need to talk about.” Davina said as she looked him up and down, her fiancé was really hot.
“Would you look at that, we even share dreams,” Kol said with a grin. Yes, he’d more than once dreamt of finding a white oak stake and plunging it into Niklaus’ heart. It was what happened there was a dagger stabbed into his own heart so many times by that same brother. Sometimes he still had that fantasy, but ah well. He just hoped he didn’t run into Klaus while he was in Mystic Falls.
“Yes, I suppose we do,” he agreed. Kol knew that Davina wasn’t happy about how different their lives had been in this alternate reality. He by no means wanted to go back, but he hadn’t hated his life there. It had actually been rather pleasant in many ways. Not that he was going to tell the love of his life that. No, no he was not.
Laughing softly she rolled her eyes but let all thoughts of Kol’s family slip away. They had other things to talk about that were a lot more important to talk about.
“Yeah, we do,” Davina said watching his reaction. “So, do you still have feelings for her?” Davina asked directly. When she stopped to think she actually felt bad for the half-vampire girl but she wasn’t okay with how things had been between Kol and her. “And it’s not just what happened in Breckentale we have to talk about, how it happened is important too.”
Kol opened his mouth to speak but promptly shut it when he realized he wasn’t sure of his answer. It was complicated and in a way that he hoped wouldn’t upset Davina even further. “Not in the way I did there,” he said after a moment. “I’ve considered her a friend for a while. Ever since we spent time together on the mission I went on some time back.”
Taking a breath he didn’t need, Kol took Davina’s hands in his. “I have memories of caring for her and the feelings we shared together have not completely disappeared now that we’re here again, but as I stand here now, no. All my love belongs to you.” He kissed the back of one of her hands. “And to you, my dear, no one will ever compare.”
Davina watched him carefully, his expression, the way his eyes moved, the tone of his voice, everything. She knew Kol better than anyone in Atlantis, she was sure in everything he was saying that he was telling her the truth.
“Well, part of me wants to say stay away from her but that wouldn’t be fair,” Davina finally said looking down at her hands with a soft smile. Despite the moment of fear, she knew in her heart that Kol was hers.
“But that still doesn't even start to cover what happened and how it happened, and I’m not talking about you and the Belikova girl,” Davina added, the magic was really bothering her.
Kol didn’t say anything, but he had a feeling that it might be a little while before Taisia sought him out. It would likely be a mission pairing or random chance that brought them together next. He didn’t like it as he considered her a friend, but he understood it. He also understood Davina’s feelings as he would have felt that way if their roles had been reversed. He wouldn’t have said as much to her, but he would have likely “asked” that the other party stay away from her.
“What do you mean?” He asked. “Has there been a consensus of how it happened other than a meddling of magic from COS?”
“Well, I did a little research, and it’s partly magic from our world, at least that’s what I’ve been figuring out, but I don’t think it’s just from our world.” Davina said as she frowned thinking about it.
“I don’t know if it was a dark object or what exactly it was, and it wasn’t just magic from our world, but,” she paused turning to get one of the books. “Look at this.” She said as she opened it and handed it to him, there was a page about prison worlds. “It’s Gemini coven stuff I think.”
Kol wasn’t too surprised that she found different types of magic, but he was surprised to hear that one of the types was one she was familiar with from their own world. Frowning, he leaned over to look at the book she opened up for him. “Prison worlds?” What they’d been in hadn’t felt much like a prison, at least not to him, but that could have been because there was combined magic involved.
“Gemini,” he repeated. “That’s the little witch that works at Lightning Brew, yes? She’s a member of the coven along with what’s his name?” Kol waved his hand in the air in reference to Kai Parker. He knew the siphon-vampire hybrid was a friend of Davina’s, but Kol despised the sort of magic his kind practiced before he was turned into a vampire. Most of them, anyway. Some were less crude in how they took their magic.
“You believe she’s one of the ones responsible?”
“Yes, Liv and Kai Parker.” She said rolling her eyes only slightly. Davina wasn’t sure she’d have become friends with Kai had they not lived together and found some common ground She got why people hated him and wanted him gone but she also didn’t think it was fair to toss him aside and forgive so many others.
“I think it’s possible, I think it’s possible she wasn’t the only one from our world that was involved and Bonnie Bennett is the only other witch besides me.”
Kol shook his head. “Those Bennett witches. Yes, it’s a good bet that she was part of it too. Liv being a Gemini, and having no others from her coven here to perform the spell with her, her magic isn’t as strong as it could be. They could have performed a spell together somehow.”
It still felt like they likely would have needed more help or some sort of catalyst to perform such a powerful spell on their own. Either that or COS really managed to interfere more than he thought. “And if this was indeed a ‘prison world’ then the obvious conclusion would be that they were attempting to send Kai Parker into one only to have the rest of Atlantis dragged with them.”
Davina nodded agreeing with everything that Kol was saying. “The question is who was helping them and what exactly went wrong and what it means for the future.” She did not like not knowing all the answers or not knowing exactly what happened.
“I get the impression they probably don’t want to talk about it too much either.” Davina noted with a small shrug.
“No, probably not,” he agreed. “You and the others will figure out who else was behind this and make sure it doesn’t happen again. I can’t imagine they’d be stupid enough to try it again anyway given the outcome.” Maybe.
“I’m just glad that we’re back to ourselves again.” As much as he didn’t mind being a normal college student, a human college student no less, he was much happier being his far superior regular self.
“We can hope,” Davina said. She wasn’t sure they wouldn’t try again. They seemed really interested in getting rid of Kai.
“Me too,” she said smiling softly. “So, you were making dinner?”
EARLY MISSION - OCTOBER 4
Back in Mystic Falls. It was a place he would have been happy never to see again, but as luck would have it here they were. Unfortunately for Kol, he was going to be stuck here for the duration of the mission rather than travelling down to New Orleans with Davina. Weren’t there other Mystic Falls residents that could handle this town so that he could stay and keep an eye on his fiancé? It wasn’t that he didn’t trust that Davina couldn’t take care of herself, but he knew what might possibly await in New Orleans, and he didn’t want to be away from her.
They were finally alone after briefing the other teams, and he settled in next to her on the bed. “Are you quite sure I’m needed here?” He asked, half-joking. They’d already discussed it, but it didn’t hurt to show how much he’d miss her one more time.
“Mystic Falls has nothing on the Quarter.”
This whole idea that they were going to be separated so soon after Breckentale had Davina uneasy but she knew they really did need to figure out what was going on.
Putting down her mission packet she looked over at him. “I’m pretty sure they picked you for your knowledge, the fact that you’re an Original Vampire and you being here is less likely to mess with anything.” Davina actually could think of a few people who would have worked too but the powers that be had their reasons.
“It has more trees,” was about all Davina could come up with for a positive of Mystic Falls. “It’s just, something is wrong and I’m wondering if whatever they,” she waved a finger indicating she was talking about Bonnie and Liv, “did, might have had more consequences than they thought it would.”
“Less likely to mess with anything?” He asked, placing a hand over his chest with mock hurt. “I must be losing my touch and reputation as a scoundrel.” It wasn’t that long ago that he’d never be trusted with this type of responsibility, but Kol had certainly found his own path. It had only taken hundreds of years to find it.
“You’re probably right.” He mulled over her words a moment. “Whatever has happened likely was a result of our being stuck in another time, but I suppose I can understand why they made the decision.” He shrugged. He knew that Davia was friends with Kai Parker, but he personally had no use for him. “We’ll sort this out. They came to the best.”
“Yeah well, in this case,” she teased. “Not every case.” She added.
“I get it, they want to get rid of Kai Parker, and as much as I actually don’t mind him, it’s really stupid to mess with magic, combine magic and not even think about what they could be doing. Besides, it could have been a lot worse. It’s just reckless and stupid.” Davina said shaking her head.
“You’d think they’d be less selfish and actually look at the big picture but from what you’ve told me about Mystic Falls people sometimes I have to wonder.”
“Desperation rarely sees the selfishness in their actions,” he admitted, knowing that he’d been at that point during certain times in his long life. “Or revenge. Revenge is very single-minded as well.” The problems he had with the lovely residents of Mystic Falls were less those that were actually in Atlantis.
“Besides, my family takes the gauntlet for acting without regard to others.” He reached over and tucked a stray strand of her dark hair behind her ear. “Casting such a large spell with little knowledge how it was react with the magic already existing Atlantis… that was quite reckless and stupid. Completely. Do you think they’ll try again at some point?”
Davina rolled her eyes, she knew all about how his family cast aside anyone that wasn’t a Mikaelson. She just also didn’t like the way people in Mystic Falls seemed to do it and act like they were better than everyone else for doing it. She’d done a lot more homework before coming on this trip and everything she saw was people who thought they were above their mistakes.
“I don’t know, I think Liv would do nearly anything in her power to get rid of Kai, and Bonnie seems to feel exactly the same, and I get it, Kai’s done some horrible things to both of them, but to put everyone else at risk to get rid of one person who can’t even do anything while in Atlantis doesn’t seem like the best use of time. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did try and figure out something else.”
“I suppose someone ought to be keeping a close eye on them then, yes? The device they used as part of the spell - the ascendant? They no longer have access to this?” Kol assumed that it would have been taken by them as it would only tempt fate.
“I don’t know Liv as well, but Bonnie Bennett is smart. Even if they come up with another plan to try and banish him, it won’t be anytime soon. Just look at how long it took them to act this time. Knowing that they’re being watched and that it went dramatically wrong in their first attempt, it’s unlikely that either of them will try again soon.”
“They better not,” Davina said seriously. The magic they’d used was dangerous and Davina couldn’t help but still feel like more was going on than just what they’d done.
“It’s just selfish, we’re in the middle of a war and they’re worried about one person, we’ve put our differences aside with Klaus when it mattered,” okay, so Davina still wanted to get rid of him and thankfully she didn’t have to deal with him here but that was totally different, or so she told herself.
“I don’t know if they’ve got the ascendant or not,” Davina said honestly.
Kol couldn’t help but give her a knowing look in response to his brother. “I think it helps a great deal that Niklaus is not here.” It would also depend which version of his brother came to Atlantis if he did ever happen to show up. There was a big difference between the Klaus of several years ago before Hope was born to the Klaus that took his portion of the Hollow. Still, Kol was more than happy not to see him. He just hoped that Davina didn’t run into him in New Orleans.
“Let’s hope that they don’t,” he said and pulled her close, kissing her forehead. “I’m more concerned in sending you off to New Orleans.” Holding her hands in his, he smiled a bit when he felt the ring on her left hand. “When we return, I think this finger needs to have another ring.”
“Yeah, I just hope he knows what’s good for him and stays away from us,” she knew it wasn’t always that simple but she was hopeful that would be the case.
“I’ll be fine, I know New Orleans, and I know it better than anyone else going, except for Marcel.” She said rolling her eyes a little bit at it but smiled quickly afterwards. “So, you want to do the whole get married thing?” Davina grinned fine with the change of subject.
“Indeed,” Kol agreed about his brother. In fact, the only one he truly would have been happy to see would be his sister Rebekah. Normally, that might have been either of them, but Kol had some mostly unresolved grievances with his eldest sister.
Talking about their upcoming nuptials, though, brought out a smile. “I do. Very much.” He lightly squeezed her hand and ran the pad of his thumb across her knuckles. “I don’t want to wait any longer. After we get back, we’ll move forward with our plans.” They’d started making a few plans, but the time in Breckentale had brought those to a halt. “What do you say?”
“Okay, so when we get, we get married,” Davina agreed without hesitation. “But we’re not doing a Halloween wedding okay?” She added only partly serious.
Feigning disappointment only for a moment, Kol then smiled and leaned in to kiss his beautiful fiance. “If you insist.” He couldn’t think of anything better than the day he was able to call her his wife.
