Don Givens, the eldest of the Givens siblings was never your standard older sibling type. For as long as he could remember he went against the grain of fulfilling familial expectations. But that didn’t limit his affection for his family members. When he got word that Finn, three years his junior, had been hospitalized Don was there….the last of the siblings to get there, but he was there. While the girls hovered for hours, Don made sure to do the coffee runs, the food runs, even the entertainment runs. In a lot of ways he dealt with the fear of losing his only brother by being in the room as little as possible. Even retired for the evening before the rest of them. It wasn’t that he didn’t care - it was simply he knew he couldn’t be much help. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen whether he was there or not. When he got the text from Elle the morning Finn had woken up it took Don about two hours to get back to the hospital. He brought gifts, of course. “Hey, kid,” the man greeted. “How was that nap?” He placed the gift bag on the man’s lap. Rocco was glad to be awake but he was having a hard time not letting it slip that he was not who they thought he was. Eventually they were going to have to tell someone and he’d been trying to think of exactly how that was going to happen. He was lying in bed, watching the morning news when his brother came in. “Hey,” he said with a smile. “Good to see you and what’s this, a care package?” He pulled out the sausage McMuffin first with a big grin, laughed at the joint and when he found the DVD and book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, he looked at Don and rolled his eyes. “You know this is bollocks, right? Half the shit in the movie didn’t happen from what I’ve been told and this isn’t the textbook we used at……’ he stopped for a minute and then took a deep breath. Not only had he started complaining about inaccuracies in a book about their world but his accent was back.”Well shit. I suppose I need to explain myself before you call the looney bin.” Don, was staring at the man before him with raised brows and a bewildered grin on his face - he might have had an edible for breakfast that was starting to creep into his muscles. Despite his calm energy - there was an odd paranoia creeping into his head. It wasn’t so much the things his brother was saying as that accent…. That accent was…. so good. An amused chuckle escaped Don and continued into his voice, “Did you hit your head to induce that coma? Cause that accent, bro, you could audition for the role of Harry Potter when you get out of here. I’ll make the call to an agent myself.” He was fucked, there was no way around it. They’d agreed to tell one person and it looked like he’d just done it without even meaning to. “Sit down,” he said. Don took the seat at his brother’s bedside and a particular ounce of worry was present in his raised brow. “This is going to sound insane but it’s true and there are others who can back it up.” Rocco ran a hand through his hair and took a deep breath. At least there was a decent chance his brother was high and would just accept this in stride. “My name isn’t Finn and yours isn’t Don for starters. Our sisters are still our sisters but they have other names too. Our last name is Spinnet, like in the Harry Potter books. Alicia Spinnet is our sister. We have two other Spinnets named Emelia and Elle. Your name is Leo and my name is Rocco. We have some Italian relatives and apparently they have Mafia connections or at least I’ve always wondered based on the names we got.” He stopped to take a breath and grab a sip of water. Don stared at Finn with a blank expression for a long silent beat. He cleared his throat and leaned forward to grab the chart hanging on the bed, “What drugs do they have you on?” He flipped through the paperwork only understanding some of it. “I think they might have broke you.” “This isn’t real,” Rocco urged, “We’ve been sucked into the place, we’ve got new memories and we think we’ve always been here. There are a few of us who started having these weird flashes about a month ago give or take. We all got our memories back and we know that we’re from some other place called Atlantis, which by the way we were kidnapped from home to go to. We want to find a way home but so far no one has any ideas.” “Okay,” Don placed the chart in his lap, “Say I believe you for two seconds, okay?” He paused only half a beat before asking, “As a wizard…. Am I cooler than Harry Potter?” Don’s face remained as serious as necessary to really know the answer to this hypothetical and ridiculous question. “Personally I think Potter is a bit of a wanker but don’t tell Alicia I said that,” Rocco replied. “So yes, you are cooler than Harry Potter. As am I which goes without saying.” Don nodded, “I knew it…” He slouched back into his chair. “Is your wand bigger than Malfoys in this magical coma place?” “No idea. Malfoy doesn’t seem to be here. At least he wasn’t where we were before all this. I didn’t know him all that well anyway since he wasn’t in my year. Creepy though. Like his old man.” Rocco had seen Lucius Malfoy around Hogwarts a few times and it was nearly impossible to exist in the wizarding world without knowing either him or his wife. Don grinned, “That’s really good. You’re good! I’m looking up agents,” he reached into his back pocket and pulled out his phone for a proper internet search. “How do you feel about nudity?” Rocco had no idea what his brother was doing but he couldn’t help being curious. “Nudity? Well I guess it all depends on who it is. If you’re about to show me naked pictures of yourself, I’d really rather not see that. This whole thing has me confused enough as it is.” Especially since in reality he was older than his brother and has seen him naked on a few occasions, none of them on purpose. Don snorted, “No, man, nudity as in acting. I hear they pay more if you're open to nude scenes.” He proceeded to search for talent agents in Colorado. “If that accent sticks around we could fit you into the Brits across the pond casting pool. Maybe even get you cast in some of those superhero flicks people go apeshit for.” “I’m not crazy and I’m not faking this,” Rocco said, his tone firm. “As crazy as it sounds, this is not real. We were first brought to this place to help save creativity and then we were brought here. I don’t know why they took our memories but they did. I can even give you names of other people that have already…….woken up, I guess you’d say.” He had no idea how to explain this, it did sound crazy, he knew that but he needed for Leo to believe him. “Woah, okay, bud,” Don looked up from his phone. He recognized the tone and always thought it was adorable when his younger siblings tried to ‘older sibling’ him. But this - this was different. A desperation in Finn's voice it was….real. “How exactly did this waking up stuff start?” He asked, leaning forward to show interest. “Just this feeling that something was wrong. Looking around, realizing that something was off.” Rocco ran a hand through his hair and sighed. “I thought I was going mental because it didn’t last long but it happened more than once over a few days. I met someone else who was having the same kind of feelings. Then one morning I woke up and I knew my name, I Knew all of you by your proper names, I remembered things from home but I also had the memories from here, from being Finn Givens. There are about eight or nine of us who woke up the same way around the same time.” Don’s eyes narrowed at his brother and immediately went to a CIA conspiracy theory plot of mind control, but held his tongue on the suggestion as Finn…. Rocco …. His brother….seemed distraught enough to listen. “Do you think, these memories could have overloaded your system and triggered the coma?” It made sense when he heard it put that way and Rocco nodded. “I suppose it could have. From what I’m hearing, it seems like all of us went comatose on the same day. That’s the only connection there is.” He still didn’t know why they had been the ones to wake up early over other people and that was something to think about too but there might not be an answer. Don was conflicted in that moment. As much as he wanted to believe this fantasy, Finn sounded insane. A real life Dorothy post-twister incident where Don obviously filled the role of Aunt Em. Clearing his throat and leaning in curiously so his elbows were on his knees. “So… whats next? If this is real, whats the next move?” “I don’t know to be honest. All of us agreed to tell one person and we’ll meet and see what we can figure out. I know it sounds mental, believe me I know. I wouldn’t have believed me ether if I hadn’t talked to someone else but I’m not making this up.” Rocco sighed. He could tell that his brother wasn’t entirely sure of any of this but at least he was trying to wrap his head around it which was about all he could hope for right now. Don took a long moment to stare at his brother. The palm of his hand pressed over his mouth as to keep anything stupid from spilling out. It made him uncomfortable to know that Finn/Rocco was discussing this delusion with other people. Psychology 101 would say it was enabling the delusion. “Alright,” the man finally spoke as he leaned back into his chair. “Well… I guess let me know when the next meeting is.” It felt wrong hearing the words out loud. But Don thought he'd rather be aware of the delusion for Finn than try to shut him up in a padded cell. Maybe… this could be monitored and along the way if it got too ridiculous - maybe it'd go away. |
