She was on an island and it was raining. Roxanne had no idea where she was, it didn't seem familiar and from what she could tell in the pouring rain, it wasn't a place that she'd been before. She was wearing some sort of poncho and she pulled the hood over her head and ran for the first shelter she saw which was a cave slightly uphill from where she was standing. Once she was inside, she took off the wet poncho and laid it on a rock to dry and looked around her. There was a bit of light coming from outside so she could at least see what was directly in front of her. "Where is this place?" she said aloud, gazing around her, hoping something would jog her memory. "You don't know because you haven't been here yet," said a woman's voice. Roxanne jumped as the cave suddenly grew bright and the most beautiful woman she'd ever seen was standing in front of her. She had long cury golden hair, big blue eyes and was wearing a blue and white robe. "Who are you?" Roxanne asked. This wasn't someone she knew and while normally she would have been frightened, she wasn't. She felt calm and peaceful despite being in a strange place with a strange woman. "I don't know you. Do I?" "You do and you don't," said the woman cryptically. "I've been with you your whole life although you've never seen me. Not that you recall anyway. I can take many forms and from time to time, I'll come visit you to see how you are. I'm your guardian angel, child." Roxanne began to wonder if she was losing her mind because she certainly didn't believe in angels as much as the idea of having one who watched over her appealed to her. "Why are you here now? And where am I?" Roxanne looked about her again before turning to face the angel. "I'm dreaming this aren't I? It's the only explanation." The angel laughed and it sounded like church bells. "Yes, child, you're dreaming. I couldn't appear to you in my real form if you weren't. It would be too much for you to comprehend but this way I can talk to you and you can see me as I really am. I'm here to see how you're doing and to let you know that even when things seem hopeless, you shouldn't give up. You're on the right path and you don't have to walk it alone, don't try to push those away who care about you." None of it really made any sense but Roxanne wasn't about to argue with an angel so she nodded. "Okay. Can you at least tell me your name?" Just as she'd suspected, the angel shook her head. "No, I can't. I'm sorry but we aren't allowed to do that but I'm always with you even when you don't know it. Take care my child...." Roxanne sneezed and brushed at her nose as she opened her eyes. "Oh Marty, please don't do that, your nose is cold!" she said to her dog as she sat up and turned on the light. The dream came back to her in a rush and she looked at the little dog. Was any of it real? The angel telling her that she was always with her or had she just been reading too much of Dante's Inferno for her World Lit class? Shaking her head, she lay back down and turned off the light, pulling Marty close to her and looking into the dog's eyes. "Are you in there?" she whispered. The only answer she got was a lick on the nose before Marty snugggled close and feel asleep. Seconds later, Roxanne had joined her. |
