ELLE GIVENS (SPINNET) + KENDALL ANDERS (SARA LANCE)
LOW | COMPLETE
It was her weekend off at the resort, and Elle decided to take advantage of the Breck Arts Festival happening over a week or two. While she could appreciate the arts, taking time out of her normal activities to check out a festival wasn’t normally on her list. This festival, though, seemed liked it was more up her alley with all sorts of different events and types of exhibits. It was spread out all over town, and today was her second day exploring.
The day before, she’d walked a trail with musicians perched high in trees. It was a change from running a trail with headphones in her ears, but Elle didn’t run this time around. She walked and appreciated the music being played along with the scenery. She actually enjoyed it more than she thought she might, so she decided to go find another trail for a second day.
Day number two consisted of artwork instead of music, although this “artwork” was unlike anything she’d ever really seen before in any gallery she’d been to. And Elle had visited galleries all over the world during her travels. A huge troll-like creature set up along the trail that she could tell had taken hours upon hours to design and create. It wasn’t something that Elle herself had the patience for, so it gave her another appreciation for the artist’s work. As she approached the ginormous piece of work, she was able to get an up close look at what it had taken to help make the creature come to life.
Kendall loved the festival and was glad to have the day off so she could check things out. She’d heard about the wooden troll and decided to check it out for herself. Seeing the view up close definitely didn’t disappoint.
“It’s really great, isn’t it?” she said as she recognized Elle Givens from the lodge and elsewhere around town. “I’m pretty sure I’d never have the patience to make anything this cool.”
Elle looked up when she heard a voice. She didn't know Kendall well, but she knew of her and through a couple friends. Shaking her head, she laughed a little and looked back at the gigantic wooden troll.
"Me either. I mean, I know this isn't the first one the artist has ever done, but what I want to know is... who decides that their next art project is going to be this." She motioned to the thing with her hands. "A big ass troll in the middle of the woods."
Don't get her wrong, Elle thought it was incredible, and any type of unusual art had always fascinated her during her travels. But this was something even different. "There's a lot here, but it's my favorite part of the festival so far."
Kendall laughed. “No kidding. You have to wonder what kind of drugs he was on when he got inspired for this thing.” She had to admit it was pretty damn cool, but she seriously couldn’t imagine where the inspiration for this kind of thing actually came from.
Nodding, she agreed it was one of the best parts of the festival, weird or not.
“Hey, you’re Charlie’s sister, right?” She’d been in the same class as Charlie in school and they’d been friendly back then. They still hung out from time to time and it wasn’t nearly as awkward as it should be that Kendall used to sleep with her boyfriend. “I’m Kendall.”
Elle had gone back to admiring the troll and the way the artist had connected the pieces of wood together. Up close, it looked to be in a bit of disarray, but taking a step back it looked so much different. She looked up when she heard the other girl mention one of her sister’s names.
She nodded. “Yeah, we’re sisters. I’m Elle.” Looking at Kendall, Elle thought she did recognize her, but she more so recognized her as Luke’s wife. Well, sort of if any of the rumors she’d heard were true. Not that she was going to start off the conversation in that way.
“I work over at the resort as a ski instructor.”
Kendall nodded, a friendly grin on her face. “I’m a bartender at Ollie’s,” she said, “so if you ever need a good drink, I’m your girl.” Any sister of Charlie’s probably did most of her drinking at Frizzante, but Ollie’s was a different kind of atmosphere, so you never knew.
“It’s hard to believe the season’s about to start up again already. Seems like spring just started,” she added.
“That’s right,” Elle said with a nod. “I’ve been there a handful of times, so I’ve probably seen you a time or two. I usually go for the mostly free drinks over at my sister’s place though.” She grinned. Sometimes, though, she’d go to the other places in town depending on what her objective was for the night. If she was feeling extra flirty? She’d go elsewhere, and she was pretty sure it was appreciated.
“Yeah, I’ve been enjoying some of the downtime and the chance to get away for awhile when things are slow.” Elle loved to travel, and she usually tried to do some during the offseason. “I guess things won’t really be slowing down too much for you after the summer once the other end of the season amps up.”
Stepping back from the huge troll, she looked up at the big guy for a second. “Want to take the rest of the trail together?” She asked. “Or if you were headed the other way, that’s cool too.”
Laughing, Kendall shook her head. “No, you can pretty much count on people to come drink year round,” she said. It didn’t really matter what side of the season it was, Ollie’s was usually pretty packed. Sara liked that it made her shifts go faster. She never bored.
She grinned and nodded at the invitation. “More fun with company, right?” she agreed easily. “Let’s do it.” It sounded more fun than walking the trail alone.
"I know I do," Elle said with a grin. She didn't necessarily consider herself a lush, but she could definitely keep hold her liquor and enjoyed a drink pretty often. Alright, maybe she was a tiny bit of a lush, but as long as she wasn't stupid about it and had fun, what else mattered?
"Exactly," she grinned again and set off with Kendall down the rest of the path to see what else they could find.
