Glancing down at her phone at the arrivals and departures she smiled seeing a familiar name on the screen. Her first memories of Everett Ross started to fill her mind. He’d been part of the team that had recruited her originally into the CIA. While she’d gone much more black ops and off the grid, she’d worked with him on and off during different missions. She remembered a particular one in Algeria where she’d needed help getting out of a bad situation. Rose didn’t usually call in for help getting out of places but it’d been one of the few. Looking up the room number he’d been assigned too she jumped up and headed straight to the apartment. She got one knock in before the door opened and she saw his face. “Agent Ross, I was starting to think you were never going to show up for your Atlantis assignment.” She said with a serious expression before a small smile started to pull at the side of her lips. Ross was still trying to process it all. He’d been at the UN where T’Challa was speaking and spotted something on the floor. He bent to pick it up so no one would slip and the next thing he knew he was waking up in a white bedroom in a place he didn’t recognize. His first thought was that he’d been captured somehow although he wasn’t sure who was hunting him these days and then the hologram had started. By the time it was finished, he was even more confused, but at least he wasn’t a prisoner. He could leave if he wanted but he was intrigued by what he’d heard, He got up, went into the bathroom to wash his face and collect himself, and heard the knock on his door as he came out. “What the hell?” he muttered. Who could it be, he hadn’t been here that long so how would anyone know he was here? Video surveillance? He looked up but didn’t see anything that would suggest such a thing and made a mental note to check for bugs after he answered the door where there was an even bigger surprise waiting. “Rose?” he said in disbelief when he opened the door. “My god, I…..what are you doing here? Come in.” Ross stepped back and let her in. How long had it been since they’d seen each other? He couldn’t remember but it had been a good few years. Doing her best not to laugh a little at his surprise she just smiled and headed into the apartment. “I got pulled here sometime in March and decided to stick around.” She had no idea when the last time was for him that they’d seen each other but it could be a day, a week, a few years for all she knew. That was just how life in the CIA could be. “I’ve been here for a few months now, believe it or not.” She looked him up and down for a moment, he looked mostly the same to her, maybe a little bit older, his hair gave it away. “So, what’s happening at home?” “A lot,” he said simply. While the CIA and SHIELD weren’t best friends by any means, they were aware of each other and Ross knew about Grant. More than likely Rose knew too, she had her sources after all, but he wasn’t going to bring that up unless she did. “I’ve been all over the world it seems but for the last several months, I’ve been in Wakanda. I was at the UN listening to the king of Wakanda speak when I found the coin on the floor as I was leaving and now here I am.” Apparently recruited to fight a war to save creativity. He wasn’t sure exactly what he was supposed to do but he’d gone into missions blind before. “What exactly is this place all about? I saw the hologram and it explained things but it’s not the same as hearing it from someone who’s been here.” Ross knew that Rose would be honest with him, that was one of the reasons he liked her. She didn’t pull any punches and he respected that. It also said a lot that she had decided to stay. “Wakanda,” Rose smiled. “T’Challa and Shuri are here from Wakanda, along with a lot of other people from our world.” She wasn’t sure jumping right into the fact that her brother was here, well, one of them. It also told her he might not know about Thanos or what some of the others had recently learned. Rose always updated herself on world events regardless of what world she happened to be in apparently. “The hologram gives you a good overview of what it’s all about, it’s pretty straightforward in the sense of trying to save creativity and stop COS, but it’s a rather strange place to live too.” She shrugged. “There was a yellow pig at the base today that you had to pet to get into the building.” “T’Challa and Shuri are here?” Ross was surprised. He’d just seen T’Challa and it hadn’t been that long since he’d seen Shuri. “So there really is something to all that multiverse theory I’ve heard about but couldn’t make any sense of. That’s a lot to wrap your mind around.” He wasn’t the most scientific man around, his talents lay in other areas but this was definitely fascinating. “It’s really good to see you though, it’s been a long time no matter what universe we’re in.” He laughed as she told him about the pig and shook his head. “Well, it sounds like it’s never dull around here. Which is good because it keeps a person on their toes. Where did this pig come from or was it just one of those strange things that happens that you mentioned?” “There seems to be, yes, they all I think from what you’re saying are a little bit ahead of from where you are.” Rose wagered. She was going to leave it open for him to ask questions if he wanted to know or not. “I’m sure they’ll both be pleased to see you.” She did know that was most likely true. “Things are never dull around here.” She smiled thinking about it. “I have no idea where the pig came from, there is an endless stream of things that appear to happen here that are on the strange thing.” She wasn’t going to bring up the fact that all her clothing had vanished one day and she had to borrow from her roommates. “It sounds like there will be plenty to do,” he said. “I’m going to be working as a trainer in the clandestine division so at least I’ll be doing something familiar.” It had been a while since he’d done any field work and he found that he was looking forward to the idea of getting back to training, maybe even going on a mission at some point. “Good, there are some that are really good, others could use more work.” She smiled. “They put me in communications, but as a floating agent.” She offered. “I think you’ll find the training staff, interesting, good, but interesting.” She thought to the different powers on the different teams. “I know we’ve got a lot of different powers and abilities back home, but here we’ve got witches, vampires, Jedi, and some people I’m not really sure what they are, but it’s a really wide mix.” “Vampires? That’s interesting. I take it they’re friendly and not running around town trying to suck the life out of people if they’re part of all this. So the Luke Skywalker that I saw on the list of trainers is actually Luke Skywalker? That’s not the least bit intimidating.” he laughed and shook his head. “I wonder if I could get him to show me how to use a lightsaber? Probably not the first thing I should ask though is it.?” CIA operative and ace pilot he might be but Ross was still a fanboy at heart when it came to some things. Laughing she nodded. “Yeah, they’re mostly all friendly, no one is running around trying to eat people,” she paused. “At least not that I’ve heard of, but I guess it could happen.” Nodding she smiled softly. “Yup, Luke Skywalker is actually here. I don’t think it could hurt to ask him, he seems like a pretty nice guy. I haven’t talked to him that much.” She paused. “Listen, you should also know that Grant is here.” Rose decided it was better for him to know before running into him. Ross looked at her but didn’t let his surprise show. Being part of the CIA for such a long time was good for developing a poker face if nothing else. “Grant’s here?” He knew about the whole HYDRA/SHIELD thing of course and he had also kept up with Grant as discreetly as he could. “So the thing about coming from different places and times is true because I had heard that he was dead.” Not the most delicate way to put it but Ross wasn’t worried about offending Rose. She was a blunt as he was. “How are you? I mean how is that going? Maybe the right way to say it is when is he from?” “He’s different, spent time in another place before coming here,” she responded. “I’m really fine with all of it. It’s been good getting to know him, I didn’t really think I’d ever get that chance, even before he died.” she tilted her head. “Or, well died from where we are from.” Blinking she shook her head. “The different times part can get a little bit confusing.” “I can imagine. I haven’t talked to very many people yet but I can see how it would be. I’ve been trying to figure out when I saw you last,” he looked at her and tilted his head. “At least four years I think? It was right after Amanda and I got divorced. I don’t think you saw me though, we just happened to be in the same place at the same time but I couldn’t acknowledge you. All that fun CIA stuff. Ross remembered it a lot clearer than he would admit because he had wanted to talk to her, he’d always liked Rose and she was one of the few people in the CIA that he would trust with his life. “I’m glad you’re getting the chance to know Grant and that he’s in a better place now.” Rose was about to ask if it was really that long but his comment about getting divorced surprised her, blinking she titled her head. “I’m sorry to hear things didn’t work out with Amanda.” She meant it too, it was never easy in their line of work but that didn’t make it easier. “It’s good getting to know him again, it’s still weird, and he is really different from the kid I remember but I guess that’s how it always works with memory.” She shrugged. “Come on, I’ll show you around.” He was grateful she didn’t ask for details. Even though it was for the best, t was still hard to think about it for he had loved his wife, there were just too many things in the way. “Thanks,” he said. “I talk to her every now and then, she’s happy, that’s what’s important.” Her offer to show him around was the perfect change of subject. “I’d love a tour. I want to see what this place is all about.” |
