MARCUS FLINT + ALICIA SPINNET
PG-13 (language) | COMPLETE
The stack of VCRs on the end of her bed didn’t exactly feel like a great start to the day. Training was still a little bit rocky with how much Wanda was dealing with. It’d been a few days, but she knew her friend was still struggling. Getting out of training Alicia decided to head to Cava for Wine tasting Thursdays, even though she usually knew more about the wine than the bartenders she didn’t care.
She was pretty sure her sister wasn’t working Thursday night and even if she was Alicia was going to have her wine tasting and fuck anything else.
As she entered the bar, she turned suddenly nearly walking straight into someone holding a few mostly empty glasses. “Bloody hell.” She snapped out as she stepped backwards. Alicia knew right away it was Flint and shut her eyes in frustration. “What? Go ahead, throw the wine in my face.”
Marcus had been in a pretty good mood. He was settling into Atlantis alright, and most of the people were decent to him. Sure, the people from his own world had nothing but sneers and insults to throw his way, but otherwise, he could chalk it up to just another adventure abroad-- making friends with the locals and learning a new routine. And he’d even acclimated to his new job pretty quickly. It was kind of boring, but nothing he hadn’t done before, and it was nice to work with a friendly face, someone who could empathize with him about being disliked by those who should know them best.
So when the worst offender of them all came crashing into him, he didn’t immediately react with anger. Marcus was feeling proud of himself for having managed not to drop any of the glasses in hand. But, then he heard the scorn in Alicia’s voice, and he frowned in derision as he glanced her way. “No thanks, that’s your move,” he replied. “Shouldn’t be surprised you expect others to do it, though.”
“That’s right, you’re more about destroying people.” She snapped at him crossing her arms around her protectively. “You know I’d take the wine over what you do.” It was mean and she knew it.
He had no idea what she was talking about and said as much. “If you’re still going on about things I did before, I already told you I ain’t apologizing for something I don’t remember doing. And if you ain’t keen to tell me about it, then you can’t get mad if I do it again.” Having said his piece, Marcus moved to go around her. He was trying very hard not to let her ruin his day, although he could already feel his temper rising.
“Don’t worry I’m sure we will never be in that kind of position again. Besides you’ve made it very clear you think I’m the evil Spinnet.” She hated it when people took her sisters side, especially after everything.
Marcus snorted, and paused in his step to glance back at Alicia. “Like you care what I think,” he replied disbelievingly. “If you really wanted to change my mind you could stop being a bitch to me all the time.”
”And you are innocent?” She laughed hollowly. “Keep telling yourself that.” Dropping her arms she looked up at the ceiling. “You win, you both win. I’ll avoid the wine bar from now on.” It was a rare show of defeat but she just couldn’t take anymore.
She was confusing and infuriating, and there was something else that she made him feel that he didn’t completely understand. And now, Alicia was acting as though he’d done something to her, something that he should feel guilty over, and Marcus didn’t know what to do. “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?” he asked, his voice perhaps a little louder than it should have been due to his frustration.
Pausing she looked up at him unsure how to even answer that question. She didn’t know the answer. “Nothing.” She finally said but there was no heart behind it. “Like I said, I’ll avoid this place.” She waves her hand around it. It wasn’t like her but she couldn’t take much more. “Should have known better anyways.”
“Fine,” came the annoyed reply. “Keep your damn secrets. Act like you’re better than me, just like you always do.” Marcus started to walk away again, fully intending to get back to work, but he found himself pausing to look back at Alicia a final time. “The only person making you avoid this place is you. I ain’t keeping you from here, so don’t fuckin’ put that on me.”
“I’m not better than you.” She snapped at him. “But I don’t need to be reminded of what a horrible person you think I am when I just want a glass of wine to even try and…” she stopped. Taking a breath and shutting her eyes she tried to calm down.
“So have your damn wine then,” he replied, gesturing at one of the empty tables. “‘Less you can’t even bear to be in the same building as me or somethin’. I’ve got work to do in the back, anyway.” Marcus didn’t wait for her to reply to that. He headed off to the back room to do the work he’d mentioned, determined that he wasn’t going to let her opinion of him get him down. Several broken wine glasses told a different story, but when later asked about them he would just apologize for his clumsiness.
A few tears started to fall as she ordered a bottle to go and left the second she’d paid and it was in her hand.
