Fitzwilliam Darcy to Georgiana Darcy Georgiana, If the intention of your previous letter was to avoid raising alarm, I am afraid you did not succeed in your object. You claim that Miss Bingley and yourself arrived safely, but the imagination of an elder brother and guardian can only be stirred by the word "trouble". Had I not already planned on quitting Pemberley shortly, your letter would have induced me to do so immediately. I shall depart for Sanditon early tomorrow, and should join you in a few days time. The scenery is much the same as it was when you were here only two-weeks’ past. Of course I shall never tire of Pemberley’s grounds, but there is no need to extol its virtues to a fellow Darcy. Bingley and Hurst I believe had their fair share of shooting, while I was able to conclude my business with the steward earlier than expected. You may tell Mrs. Hurst and Miss Bingley that the other gentlemen will accompany me as far as town, where Bingley is obliged to stop on some manner of business, and will join us at a later date. I am reserving judgement on Sanditon until I see it for myself, but I am pleased to hear the weather has allowed for walking. Lately I have been convinced such exercise can only benefit a young lady, both in health and spirit. Its efficacy on gentlemen—as well as that of the sea air—I have yet to determine. Regardless, a change of scenery to someplace entirely new does have its appeal. Creating fresh memories will displace the old, and perhaps painful. Please do be cautious until I arrive, especially if you mean go walking anywhere near the construction F.D. |
