When Caroline caught sight of the 'gentleman' outside by the overturned carriage, Caroline noticed their dishevelment too. "No better than country bumpkins," she muttered to herself and not for Georgiana to hear her.
She did not approve of their driver getting down to help. Caroline had been very clear that they could send help, not be the help. She had no interest in being late in arriving in town.
Caroline had not known what was happening outside until the door was tugged open. She had been about to protest that Georgiana not dare speak to this man, until she saw that there was a pistol being pointed at them. For her own part, Caroline went quite pale.
She left the carriage with Georgiana, but she was quite livid, her expression cold and menacing at the men. Caroline did not accept his hand and climbed out of the carriage herself (and with great relief that she did not actually stumble).
"Well, you ain't no lamb." That disgusting man had been specifically looking down at Caroline's neckline of her dress where god had gifted Caroline with more in the bust than other women.
"How dare you," Caroline said and promptly slapped the man across the face.
