Edward should have already realized that Jane was not like Ms. Ingraham, or any of the other high society ladies that he'd tried to entertain himself with. What made her most different, her mind and how freely she expressed it with him -- even the harshest of truths, should have made her interests and disinterests more evident to him. She wasn't a frivolous girl that would be so easily distracted by dresses and ribbons, balls and dinners. Those sorts of things seemed to make her just as uncomfortable as they could make him at times.
"My only friend in the world, Jane," he confessed with all sincerity. Pilot might have objected if he were able, but the dog was all too happy at the feet of his master's new friend. And, Rochester was all too content with Jane's hands in his. He rose the left and placed a kiss on her knuckles before he rose from his seat. "I'll bid you goodnight. We have much left to prepare tomorrow if we're to begin our journey soon."
