Rochester was surprised that the girl had been able to control herself and not ruin the surprise. He was undoubtedly an imposing figure and he did not restrain himself, even with young Adele, yet she was still audacious in her own ways and he quietly admired that. "Adele can be ... spirited," he might have used another word to describe the insolence if she'd broken her word, but his pride in her character made it so he did not speak too poorly of her. Especially in front of her governess.
"It is quite necessary," he assured her even as Jane protested. "The seaside requires an entirely different sort of wardrobe, Ms. Eyre. Not what we country folk are accustomed to wearing." He included himself in that bunch although he owned dozens of suits fitted for London and Paris, hoping that Ms. Eyre would not take offense to her lack of dresses. "We will have social events. Calls paid, I am certain. You must have a new wardrobe. I insist." He would like to see her in fine laces and satins, sprigged muslins and the finest cottons; the thought made him smile and lean forward from his seat.
His hands reached across the distance between them to brazenly take her palms into his. "Creatures like us are not accustomed to kindness, Miss Eyre. Allow me the pleasure of correcting that error."
