It had now been weeks since the conversation with Booth and apart from a short interaction on the network and one awkward and brief conversation they had not communicated at all. She was trying to remain calm, trying to rationalize it to herself that he needed time, that it was normal. But all she really wanted to do was go over there and barge in the door and yell at him for being a liar. He said they could remain friends, but so far what they were was nothing. She wanted to lament about how miserable she was in this place and that she didn't even have her best friend to get through it with, but she made herself stop. If there was anything Temperance Brennan had learned in life it was that she could get through anything without needing anyone. She had done so many other times and this one should be no different. So instead of confronting Booth she decided it would be more productive to take her frustration out on the pavement. She put on the jogging pants and tank top she had found in her drawer and the sneakers she had in her closet. A generous coating of sunscreen later and she was out the door of her building and ready to get lost on the pathways that wound throughout the compound.
After a brisk walk to warm up she began to jog at a steady pace, finding comfort in the rhythm of her feet hitting the ground and her own breathing. She knew it was better to pace herself, but she couldn't help herself as her speed picked up and the resort became a blur around her. It had been a while since she had run last and soon she could feel her legs starting to hurt and her lungs burning, but she didn't care. She kept on until the sharp pain of a cramp sliced through her side and she was forced to stop, gasping for breath with her hands on her knees. It wasn't until she saw the small circles darkening the ground below her that she reached up to touch her cheek and realize she had been crying.
