This was quickly becoming the best chess game River had ever played. Simon had humored her flights of fancy when they were children, but it wasn't the same as having an opponent who enjoyed initiating on-the-fly changes. The Master seemed completely capable of remembering the ever-more-labyrinthine rules, too, which made the game challenging and (even better) interesting. She couldn't predict her opponent, and she was having the time of her life. When Simon arrived, River was bowed low over the board, her nose only inches from her remaining knight.
"But it's not just chess, Simon. Schrodinger abducted my bishop and now I have to decide if I want to send a rescue party. He's both alive and dead until I make up my mind."
As crazy as the pronouncement may have been to poor Simon, River's face was split in a wide grin. Whatever was going on, she was enjoying herself. "Rescue! I say 'rescue.' Nothing ventured, nothing gained." She reached out and moved the knight in the traditional 'L' shape, but it passed through one of the wormhole squares and she skipped it over a few spaces to drop it on the 'out' side.
