Davina was in awe of the book. She felt it's power and she wanted to look through it. The little bit she had seen when Faye flipped through it already had her wanting more. This book was powerful and she was surprised they had left it so carelessly laying around.
They needed to leave. Even if Davina didn't feel the urgency in herself, she could feel it in Faye. Faye was a witch too and Davina trusted her instincts. They both scrambled for the window when a black cat swished it's tail from the windowsil.
"You two need to hurry," the cat said.
Davina and Faye both froze, eyes wide because there was a talking cat. Davina had never seen a talking cat before.
"Go! You must go now or they'll find you. Hide the book!" the cat scolded them as he moved out of the way.
Davina didn't have to be told twice by a talking cat to leave. She and Faye crawled out of the window and ran through the woods. Davina ran behind Faye but not because she had shorter legs. She wanted to make sure that Faye kept a tight hold on the book. The two of them raced through the backyards and out under the streetlight, boots hitting the pavement.
She stopped to catch her breath near the car. "Did that just happen?" And what time was it anyway? It was impossible to keep track with no sunlight.
