Damon thought everything was going to be okay. It had to be. Damon's blood did the trick of healing Bonnie and after that they just had to wait it out. See if Bonnie could make it until morning. Damon wanted to figure all of this out before the next night. He didn't want for Bonnie to fall asleep because that meant she would have to face whoever this Freddy guy was. Damon wanted to avoid that at all cost so he stayed, sitting on the edge of the bed and watching, doing whatever he could to keep Bonnie awake.
Then it happened. Damon was talking - not even talking about anything important. It was something totally stupid. Damon was explaining how he had to kick some dumbass out of OPUS because the guy was trying to compare his penis size to a roll of sushi. Damon was telling the story to make Bonnie laugh but she didn't. There was nothing but silence and Damon noticed it, the flutter of her eyes and then she was out like a light.
"Bonnie, no," Damon said, moving forward but Dixon was there to do what he wanted to do. It was then that the screaming started again - Bonnie was shouting, crying for help, for them to help her but they couldn't. Damon froze and then he saw it. The was a flicker of a flame that suddenly consumed the entire bed with Bonnie still in it. Damon's eyes went wide - he was so in shock as the screaming continued and the smell of burning flesh hit his nose.
The fire spun out of control and Dixon was still there. Damon snapped out of his state of shock and grabbed the other man, keeping him from trying to get to Bonnie who was dead. The screaming had stopped. There was nothing left of Bonnie but a burning skeleton of dead ash.
"Stop," Damon said, dragging Dixon out of Bonnie's room as smoked swarmed them, setting off the fire alarm but Damon ignored the wailing. Damon also ignored Dixon's words but that didn't mean they weren't right. Damon was supposed to be useful. Damon was supposed to be there to protect her. How could he let Bonnie die? How could he let that happen to her?
"I'm sorry," Damon said, looking at Dixon with blue eyes with their shine snuffed out. There was nothing else that needed to be said and Damon couldn't stay there.
Damon left before Dixon could even see the tears in his own eyes.
