Stefan watched in amazement as the entire statue put itself back together. His eyes wide, he turned back and looked at Alex who was on the ground, which he offered her his arm and pulled her back up, but then he was back staring at the statue. It was ... as if nothing had ever happened and people were looking at it just as they were. Okay, so that just happened. Now what? He could hear sirens in the distance and they weren't going to stick around to find out.
"Come on, we need to get out of here," he said, knowing full and well that he could use his vampire speed, but Alex didn't have that luxury and he was trying to keep the fact that he was different from her. Friendship built on secrets wasn't exactly a friendship, but he considered Alex a friend. Being a vampire didn't define Stefan, it was just something else about him. It was a conversation for another time. Right now, though, he needed to make sure that she was safe. If anything, he would take the fall for it, because he knew that he could get out of it. She couldn't.
They walked away as casually as they could while people were running past them to see what had just happened. It was the talk of the strangers around them for about a block and then it was as if he could breathe. Not that he needed to.
Once they got to the hotel, they both looked at eachother and the elevator ride was short and quiet and eventually they went their separate ways. He went back to his room, not even to Caroline's although she was just next door, unless she was with Elena, which was likely, he wasn't sure. Either way, he closed the door behind him as he tried to make sense of everything.
