There were good days and bad days. But the longer she was here, the more chance there was for a bad day. No Simon. No disgusting medicine. Stuck. Landlocked. Always a chance that they would show up. They would cut into her brain and make her their doll all over again. She didn't want to be that. She couldn't be that. She would... she would.... The thoughts were all there, jumbled and a mess. She had been fine before. She made friends with Dawn. She found Koschei's Death with Tiberius. She played in the snow. Those were good days. And while she almost never was able to go a day without correcting a teacher on why they were wrong, it had never dissolved into this.
It had been an innocent mistake, how was anyone supposed to know what it would trigger in her? But when the science teacher had put on the blue gloves to show the class an experiment (proper lab safety)? That was it. Something in River that had been so tightly guarded, her ability to remain somewhat grounded and remember where she was at the very least, well, that went away.
"No...."
It had started as a scared gasp, eyes widening in recognition. She never had seen their faces. At least she couldn't remember them in the haze. But she always knew that they wore blue gloves. She saw them in masks, the needle that was coming towards her and she couldn't breathe, her senses on high alert. She wasn't in Salem High School anymore. She was back there, at the Academy, strapped in a chair and unable to get out. Fight or flight had kicked in and all River knew was that she needed to get out. Away from the people who wanted to hurt her, away away away. She needed to find Simon. Simon was the only one who would listen, she had sent him letters but then he hadn't... no. He would figure them out. He would...
In a panic, the tray of scientific utensils clattered to the ground as she backed up. Stares, they were all looking at her. River was the odd one out. She had made friends or thought she had. But in the confusion there was revulsion, there was fear. She felt it all and it made it all the louder. She wanted to scream at them to get out of her head. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. River didn't know. She swore in Chinese and English, grabbing a scalpel as if it would protect her.
At some point, she'd ended up out of the classroom, sitting curled up in a corner. There was something about her going home and that she would need to see the Guidance Counselor when she returned to school. River didn't know. She just knew she couldn't breathe and that it wasn't safe, it would never be safe. She'd been foolish to ever think it could be.
