Raising both brows at Sam's initial response, Steve took a longer drink of his water as he slid a few inches to the side so Sam could rinse out his bowl. Even though they were both clearly on the same page, he wasn't exactly sure how to respond. He wanted to offer something that could have been comforting, but the year was 2017 and they still had to worry about this shit.
It didn't matter that reported crime and Salem hadn't changed at all. The witch hunters were only feeding into fear and paranoia, and the general public was either buying it, or not knowing how to combat that kind of ideology. Most people didn't until it was far too late, and since it had been made abundantly clear that anyone's freedom could disappear with the point of a finger, people were inclined to be silent. Things were going to get worse before they got better, and the team was going to have to stand their ground to make the difference.
"It's okay, thanks anyway," Steve shook his head, finally turning around to down the rest of his water and pour himself a cup of coffee. "I got about three hours, I'll be out of here before you know it. No one will miss a box of power bars, right?"
Steve paused at the counter, deciding to leave his cup of coffee to cool as he turned back around to face Sam. He couldn't help but frown as he watched Sam drag his hands over his face. He never doubted that Sam felt deeply about the situation. Steve wondered when the last time his friend actually got a decent night's sleep.
"Almost?" He said quietly with a sad smile before he reached out and clasped a hand onto Sam's shoulder. "We're not alone on this. These guys may be louder and angrier, but there are people out there just like you and me that aren't going to keep quiet. We're going to figure it out like we always do, and we will put a stop to this. As long as we're here to fight them every step of the way, they're not going to win. They're bringing out the worst in a lot of people, but they're going to bring out something even better in others." Steve gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze before he continued. "You'll see."
