"That's not what it was like," Serena said, clearly distraught by the accusation of it all. How heated this fight had become was clear evidence that they were only a ghost of their former selves. Things in Salem were nothing like they were in New York and trying to live like they had in New York had been nothing but a farce.
"I don't love you anymore!" Serena finally shouted over his tirade and it shut him up immediately. She was almost surprised by how quiet he got and so quickly. "I tried, okay?" she said in a quieter but still intense voice. "I tried to make it work here. I tried to act like we could still be what we used to be. But we aren't, Dan. We're different now and I just, I'm not in love with you anymore."
Serena looked away from him then because she felt terrible. She hadn't even realized it with how overwhelming his anger was. She hadn't even noticed just how over they were. She hadn't realized that she had fallen out of love with Dan Humphrey. When had that happened anyway?
"That's not a marriage. And I can't help how I feel. So if you came over here to yell at me go ahead and get it out of your system but then you should leave. And you should sign those divorce papers so we can both move on."
Her eyes turned hard, having absorbed so much of his anger by now that she was practically bursting with it.
