Serena had never seen Dan like this before but frankly, he hadn't been himself since he had arrived in Salem. To be fair, Serena was hardly herself when he arrived either. She had been ruined that one day. Those three people were acting crazy outside and then suddenly a tornado ripped through her whole life and changed it forever. But her resentment for what happened that day didn't span as wide as her fear of Dan in that moment. Especially since he had knocked her phone out of her hand. She gave him an exasperated look. He reeked like booze.
"Wow, Dan. Is that what you really think?" Serena demanded. "That I've been cheating on you with Nate? I wouldn't do that! Nate is my friend." And he had been Serena's friend for a long time, since they were little. Serena had made a long habit of bouncing back and forth between Nate and Dan for a few years but she had learned something from all of that going back and forth.
Serena would never love Nate as much as Nate loved Serena. Dan would never love Serena as much as Serena loved Dan. It was a sad little circle and so she had ended it. She loved Dan more than she loved Nate and she had chosen him despite how he had ripped her and her friends and family apart for years on his gossip website.
"I'm not doing anything to you! I'm doing this for us, Dan. We haven't been happy in a really long time and don't you think we deserve some happiness?"
She was making the Serena face again. Big woeful blue-green eyes, lips slightly parted, head tilted in just the right way. 'I'm not the enemy,' her face said. 'I got hurt too'.
"Can you at least just calm down and come into the kitchen and I'll get you some water?"
