Derek could have argued just how lucky he was for days. He had been taken advantage of by his uncle and lost his first love tragically, by his own doing. Then he had fallen for this psychotic bitch and allowed her access to his family. Fuck. He was dumb. He had been so head over heels then. He honestly thought that he would offer Kate the bite eventually and she would join his pack, his family. How stupid he had been right up until she struck that match. Even after, he never had the guts to tell Laura the truth.
He didn't consider himself lucky at all. He had lost nearly everything and the only thing he had left was a little sister who might as well be a stranger to him now. They had missed out on so much time together. He still remembered Cora as a little girl and instead she had lived an entire life in South America that he didn't know about and had nothing to do with. He was trying to have a relationship with her now but he wasn't the most social or open guy on the planet.
"Enjoy that first full moon, Kate," he called after her. "I know I will."
He wanted to smirk at her, but he managed to hold it back, his eyes watching her carefully. Just like her, he refused to turn his back. Though he was positive that Kate would shoot him in the face every bit as readily as she would shoot him in the back. In fact, she would probably be happier to hurt him to his face.
He refused to move, waiting exactly where he was until she disappeared around the corner. Then and only then did he allow his shoulders to drop slightly. He took a deep breath and had to tell himself to reign his anger back in. He needed to talk to his sister and he needed to do it now.
The food was forgotten as he headed back to the hotel.
