[CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. Picking up the sturdiest-looking one and veeeery carefully but veeeeery quickly laying it out on the desk.]

[The pages crackle, and you can see fine lines forming where it threatens to break apart, but it seems to be holding for the moment . . .

The text inside is written by hand in some foreign, scratchy looking tongue. And yet . . . as Chrono stares at it his patron's mark grows warm, and the words seem to come together for him.

"don't believe any longer. How can they lose faith at a time like this? A time when the Gods need us most of all? I know He will smile on us once more, just as they all will. We need only to weather this time of despair, and then we will be shown back to the lands that kiss the sky. The lands that I heard my elders speak of."]

[Poor fool...of course King would have self-propaganda in his own study.

Attempting to turn a page--is anything more understandable?]

[The page crumbles in your hand, but the page beneath that can still be read in part.

"came to the temple today. Those rowdy men of Vulpecula and—. They brought with them their rage and frustration, and I thought that—storm the temple itself to take their anger out on the arifacts that remain.

But He descended! He came and spoke, and his voice was—. Even the most furious of those men couldn't—. Both they and I fell to our knees before him, and He promised that we would see an end to this in time, but—against the Gods would only delay—escape.

I knew. I knew there must be a reason! It is because—that we are still here!"]

[. . .

Lowering his head so that it's eye-level with the desk and tilting the cover up every-so-gently to see if it indicates a title or author.]

[there's no indication of any writing at all on the cover or spine. It's a plain, unblemished leather.]

[Why would King be holding onto some lowly blank's personal journal...

Turning back to the pages to see if there's anything more to be gleaned. If not, carefully attempting to close it and return it to its place on the shelf.]

[Nothing else in the book appears to be very readable. There are a few words here and there, but nothing that seems especially eyecatching.]

[Still very odd...gently returning it to the shelf, then. And scanning to see if there's anything else of particular interest :|a]

[While there are a few other unmarked books, the vast majority of them seem to be dedicated to King or history. And many of those look to be in much worse condition than the book you've already examined.]

[Let's not risk leaving a bread trail of crumbled-book behind, then. Heading back towards the door--but casting one last glance around the office to be sure...hood down, ever so briefly.]
