Even a partial extent is enough to impress me with your skills. I wish I could show you my own abilities as easily.

It is enough to know you possess the abilities.

You are kind say so, but there is some pleasure for me of telling tales of my past.

Ah, well.

[stop to look around to see if the kids are listening]

I shall tell of the time I bested a Jenoine at sorcery.

[pause -- wait, do you know what a Jenoine is?]

A Jenoine is a inhuman being, who, long ago, modified my own people, creating the Houses by mixing human genes with those of various animals, and who were driven off our world and kept off by the gods and the Imperial Orb.

[skin color is mottling some]

Ancient beings of great power, then. The Protoss had similar gods in the days of our infancy.

Perhaps you will tell me of them, but not right now.

My enemies had some grudge against me -- I do not remember the reason, but they wished to kill me and my three friends, one of whom is Aerich, who you have met. Thus, since I had supported the true Empress, Zerika the Fourth, they had allied themselves with the Duke of Kana... or perhaps it was Count Skinter. Bah, he had claimed a lot of titles, among which was Emperor.

One of those enemies, Grita, was a sorceress of no little skill and had opened a gate to allow the Jenoine some access to our world, such that she could draw on its power. Furthermore, as among my friends, I was the only sorceress of note, she and her partner, Illista, chose to assault my home to incapacitate and abduct me, with the intent that my friends would follow their trail to my rescue.

A dishonorable trap.

They were not honorable individuals. Furthermore, they knew something of my nature; they wished that I be the last to die, so I may see my friends fall as they came to my aid.

Aerich and my lackey, Mica, both had been alerted to my disappearance, so set out to locate me. I am certain Khaavren and Pel -- my other friends -- would have done the same, but they were in the capital, rather than near my home where I had been abducted. Furthermore, Aerich is my lord, and I was Mica's lord, so there was the bond of fealty in addition to one of friendship -- and, well, Mica's wife died in the assault on my home.

It was well they came. They had expected Aerich; but not Mica. As he was of the House of the Teckla, they assumed he was no threat, and did not even recognize him as my servant. Thus, he was able to provide enough of a distraction with his attack such that I could free myself, though it was at the cost of his life.

It was -- he was the most loyal of lackeys. But, Grita and Illista still had the advantage; Grita used the power of the Jenoine she was in contact with to place a spell of invulnerability on herself and Illista, and to proceed in quickly killing some comrades of mine that chanced to be in the area, and in repeatedly throwing Aerich against the cave wall.

As Illista had killed Mica, I set to killing her, despite the spell, and that I was armed only with the poniard that slew my servant. And sorcery, of course, which I used to assault the barrier that Grita had placed her in.

The details of the sorcery would require an understanding of the theory, but I was able to turn her own protection against her, placing my own sorcery in opposition to the Jenoine's and Grita's. Since Illista was no sorceress herself and Grita was occupied, Illista could not deflect my assault, merely attempt to stab me before I finished my spellcasting. But, my own skill was not lacking; she could not land a serious blow. And, well, I was filled with the rage of battle -- I would not have noticed if she had.

The Protoss hold a similar fury in their hearts. You would be formidable with that anger.

I was.

It was thus that I overcame the Jenoine's protection and killed Illista. Unfortunately, my focus on my foe allowed my other enemy, Grita, to fire a spell as my back was turned, and killed me.

Which, I ask that you be discreet about. You understand, but I believe the rest of our unit will be distraught should they learn that I entered this place at my death.

I am certain my friends -- those that survived -- will remember it, and it will be recorded in the annals of my House. Though my friends no doubt would mourn my loss, they know something of Dzurlords: I would have been displeased if I had died of illness or old age.

And the Empress knows of my deeds, thus it will be recorded within the Orb for all future Emperors to review.

I do not know. He would have occupied some of Grita's attention, as she specifically wished him dead and for me to see him die painfully before she killed me. But it is hard to fight a sorceress when one is not a sorcerer or a scoundrel, and Aerich was neither. He knew he was walking into a trap when he located me.

I am sorry to impose this on you, Selendis, since you have reminded me of your distaste. If you believe it would aid our unit for it to be known, then, of course, you may mention it.

Bah, if I thought the rest of the team would be properly impressed, I would tell the tale myself.

Neglecting to pass on the information is not entirely the same as keeping a secret. I have been required to withhold details before.
