Look, Scowl. May I have a word with you in private? It's something I'm worried about, and I'd feel better if it can be said sooner rather than later.

[frustrated noise . . . Glances at Agito and stuffs both hands into his pockets, one hand with a scrap of orange cloth bandaging up some minor scrapes]

You can handle it from here. I'll try to be fast.

[and then at Akin] We can go to Canis. It's not my place to invite you into Orion's dorms.

[good -- we can move quickly then and arrive at Canis]

[once they're inside, doors closed]

I'm concerned that teams aren't talking to each other. King is on high alert, and Canis can't even get information about which teams have keystones found when we ask.

If we don't act in concert, we could end up tripping over each other. And then King wins if he catches us stumbling.

King's on high alert because some idiots tried to catch a Judge's vessel.

You think there's more keystones that've been found?

Kid's is missing -- you must have heard, given how much he carried on about it. He says either Vulpecula or Orion were the last in the area, but he couldn't see who took it. And, we know that some teams have cloaks that block a Judge's sight.

That implies that it's in a dorm or otherwise obscured so Kid can't see it. And we've talked to most teams. Unless you and Vulpecula have it...

So basically you know someone has it . . . so why is this a problem? How is anyone gonna get tripped up by that? It's a keystone in the hands of blanks. That's a good thing.

Because I don't like that we're all working apart from one another. If a team decided to destroy it, it could catch King's attention when one of his people dies.

I don't want to be eaten by the ground again, or killed by King. Doing nothing will make that a sure fate, but... if someone else does something that leads to King moving against us, I want to at least know it's coming.

And, it's not a good thing that we can't share information. If Kid hadn't raised such a fuss, we wouldn't even know someone found his keystone. We might have gone looking, wasted our time if we thought we saw clues to his old churches. Temples. Whatever.

Right. King will care about some insignificant Judge the same way he cared about his son-in-law's death a few months ago. He'll probably just be grateful for having less mouths to feed.

How are we supposed to organize? Gather a fucking meeting to discuss who to go for every goddamn time? That won't be suspicious at all. The best way to hunt is to scour specific areas. Completely. Don't stick to just one type of temple, stick to areas that there's no sign of anyone having been in. Most people leave markings to remind them of where they've been already.

Did you destroy Trickster's keystone?

I don't know. Maybe just let other teams know when you're over for trades. We've got something of an economy going, and every team has some injured members that might lead them to relying on others.

No. We killed him in the middle of the fucking arena by not giving him the food he needed, and King just sent us home. Wasn't even angry about it.

Look. You're asking us to suddenly change our behavior out of nowhere. When King has his fucking eyes on us. You don't think he'd wonder why everyone in the place is suddenly a hundred times more eager to work together? Invisible is the safest way to do this. Don't search areas that are marked, and you won't end up tripping over places that have already been searched. Maybe you'll end up looking into the temples of a Judge that's been found already, but I'd rather have to do that than suddenly pretend I'm fucking friendlier than I am and risk King wondering why.

Then are you sure he's all the way dead and not like Weaver was? There's a difference between throwing enough games to cause a disruption and destroying a keystone, Scowl. The latter implies knowledge of what the Judges are.

And we won't get many chances either way. It would be best to act all at once, so there is no warning.

You personally don't have to talk to other teams. Surely your teammates have friends on other teams? Or people they know from home?

The point is we killed or critically wounded his son-in-law. The Judge that gave him the idea to even fucking start these games in the first place—handed him a way to continue living. And he sounded as fucking cheery as ever.

Obviously we can talk to the people we already do, but anything more than that is still a change in behavior, you idiot. The way we're doing it now is the safest way, and I'm not changing my mind on that. It still communicates what's been searched without making an obvious show of it.

You don't honestly see a difference between resisting a Judge's games and finding and destroying their keystone? We do the former all the time, even if we could only have done it to such a degree with help. The latter would show we had a lot more power than King expected. It... it's like finding a raptor when you expected a purrwisp. A purrwisp can kill you, but they're mostly just irritants. A raptor is a dangerous animal.

It doesn't have to be. Let's say Sion visits Corvus to talk to people there, since he has a friend on that team. He can tell anyone there what Canis knows. Then... I don't know who Lynx or Corvus are friends with, but let's say Lacerta is called for a heart run. They pick up the information then. It's slow, but it doesn't involve a change in behavior. Just remembering to mention things.

I think you don't understand exactly what happened back then. We did that knowingly. It was painfully obvious. He lost power gradually until he was nothing at all. If that doesn't make it clear we knew exactly what we were doing, then I don't know what does.

King isn't going to come for anyone if they take out Kid because he isn't going to care. He couldn't be assed to protect the Judge who handed him his life back on a silver fucking platter when it was obvious what we were doing to him, so why would he care about some worthless small fry of a Judge? If it were Queen or one of his children, then it'd be a real concern. But it's not.

Why didn't you fucking say that's all you wanted from the beginning? You've wasted my fucking time bitching about wanting to have meetings to discuss who to go for uselessly.

King was willing to harm Delphinus for chasing a 'small fry of a Judge's' vessel.

Delphinus made themselves fucking obvious doing it too. Catching a fucking vessel? How much more blatant could those morons have gotten? Hydracula and Orion know how to make sure shit like that can't be traced to them at all. Like you said, some teams have cloaks of dorm stone. As far as King or any Judge would know, there wouldn't be a single blank around.

And anyway, I don't think Vulpecula or Orion have it in the first place. If they do, they haven't said shit to me, and they would have. We've been on good terms with Orion for a while now, and Vulpecula are my goddamn partners.

More importantly, what makes you think they'd even know how to take a Judge out with their keystone? Have you heard anything about that?
