From what I read of the great plains, edible vegetables were sparse, and the land did not take well to cultivation. Hunting was the skill that kept the tribe sustained, and those who were unable to master it were an noncontributing burden upon their resources.
An early test ensured that the duration of the burden was not overly long, and, for better or worse, the strain of that trial kept the tribe's culture what it was.
