Between you and I for example—I am aware that you value my opinion, and you are aware that I value yours. Because of that, were you to disagree with one of my beliefs, I would not think that you are dismissing it—I would first think that there are reasons of your own that have caused you to form that opinion, and I would wish to know what they are.
If, however, we did not share that understanding, there is a chance that I would see your disagreement as a dismissal, rather than an objection. And if I believed that my opinion held no value to you, then I would certainly be far more inclined to think that way. What would be the point in asking you anything? I know what you think already.
