Not at first. They were confused about how a child could have such strong experiences. And... they thought it was cruel to let humans live free on a world. That they would doom their children to suffering and death.
[sighs]
In my world, before the Oankali arrived, there was a great war, enough to kill most of the life on the whole planet. My mother lived through it, but... [frowns] I don't even think she understood why it happened. That's why the Oankali refused to let humans repopulate the planet alone; they thought it would be like giving an axe to child who had chopped off a finger with a knife.
But... I thought it was worth doing anyway. When the Oankali meet a new group of beings, they divide their population in three -- Dinso to live on the planet, Toaht to invite the newcomers to our ship, and Akjai to stay apart, and take away only memories, in case the blending goes wrong. Humans should have the choice between Dinso, Toaht, and their own Akjai -- a real choice, not just to be left alone until all the ones who lived before the war died without children.
The others agreed with that, but refused to do more than teach me what I needed to know, and allow those who wished to volunteer to help me start the project. The planet... Mars... didn't have any breathable air, and little water, so it would need to be made habitable, and humans couldn't do that work on their own.
