...right. Well, basically what a laywer is, is someone who makes sure the law is upheld for the person believed to have done the crime. They make sure people aren't wrongly punished.
Like if someone is blamed for being a thief. A lawyer is meant to defend the person, to explain why they couldn't be a thief and to provide proof of this fact. There's also another law opposite them who is supposed to bring proof that the person IS a thief. And they debate and provide evidence and witness statements for a jury to decide if they're guilty. The jury would be like the council. And the judge, in this case, being someone like the village elder who decides the punishment should the person be proven guilty.
