Mm... There was a lot going on in this one. Our alchemy wouldn't work, but that girl and the Ishvalan could still use theirs and she kept yelling at me about something. Shapeshifters and people who aren't people and schemes and hostages...

*idk, man. it's screwed up.*

Mm...

*pulling his watch out again and looking at it*

I threw this back at the Fuhrer in that memory, too. Told him I would quit being a military dog, and work against him to stop his schemes... and he threatened someone close to me. I had to take it back.... The Colonel didn't give his up; said he'd rather be a kept dog than a broken one. Bastard had better be in control by the time we get back.

[Wait let me try to parse like 70% of that]

..."Fuhrer"?

The leader of both the military and the country. Normally an average soldier--or even State Alchemist--probably wouldn't draw his attention, but I know I was starting to figure things out by then, and the Colonel must've been too. Most of his team had been made hostages through reassignments.

And we both knew by then, too, that he wasn't human. He was a homunculus, a creature created to take the role of leader and manipulate the course of events in Amestris so his creator's goal could be realized.

So...your king was a figurehead? And the military is separate from the country itself?

*shakes his head*

He had power, and lots of it... if he was a "figurehead" it was only because he was doing the bidding of the man they called "Father." To anyone who didn't know about that guy, though, he looked like he was pulling all the strings. And the military... it ran the country. There were bases and headquarters all over, and we were constantly at war or threat of war with neighboring countries. Since its founding, Amestris grew by fighting and absorbing the nations around it.

But...didn't you say you worked for that military? It doesn't sound like you approve...

I started working with them to try to get our bodies back--my brother's and my own. But things got more and more complicated the longer I was there, and the more I learned... the Colonel didn't approve either, I remember that much now, but he was trying to quietly change things from the inside.

The research I was doing for them, and with their money, could have.

I'm sure I could've just resigned myself to it... but not with what I did to my brother.

...I don't think I've really told anyone on this team. Not of the people who're still here, anyway.

Al and I... our mother died, when we were young. I thought we could use alchemy to bring her back... Human Transmutation was illegal, but we thought it was just because no one had made it work, but if we tried hard enough, if we wanted it enough, we could do it. So we studied, we researched, we trained, and when we finally thought we had all the pieces together, we tried it.

It failed. I saw it rebounding, starting to pull my brother apart, and then turning on me. I reached for him, but... *shakes his head* next thing I remember is being in an empty white space, with nothing but an enormous black Doorway, and a creepy blank guy calling himself "Truth." I was pulled into the Doorway, felt it breaking me down, filling me with information... and then thrown out before I could reach the piece I was sure I needed. When I asked the Truth to let me back in, to see it again, he told me I'd seen all I could for the toll I'd paid, and took my leg.

Then I was back in our house again, with my leg missing and Al's empty clothes on the floor beside me.

*what are you talking about, this is totally a heartwarming story of brotherly love and good decisions*

We didn't bring her back right, either. For all that... we had something that was twisted and wrong. Something that moved a little, coughed up blood, and died again.

It's fine, it was my own fault for pushing Al into it after all. That's why I have to make it right, somehow.

I got him back... sort of. Paid another toll and pulled his soul back, at least. He's still back in my world, bound to an empty suit of armor.

*nods*

To bring it back. It still exists, it's still alive, stuck in that limbo with Truth. But I couldn't pull it out on my own.
