If anything were to happen to me, an ill fate would certainly have befallen Sparta first; in that case, Hydra would be down two of its members and the next round would become increasingly difficult.

Going by numbers alone, the wiser course of action would be to leave him on his own. If he were to come back, all the better; if he were to perish, we would still be farther ahead.
