[ the stretch between here and the prospective safety of the living areas to the west is mostly wide and open, though there are a few large thick columns of rock on the way... interspersed with clumps or islands of more brittle limestone pillars, clusters of stalagmites and stalagtites radiating from those like young saplings around an old tree. The ground isn't flat, but undulates in gentle, if erratic waves, typical of most of the underground cave system. ]
