Remembrance and abandonment can be connected... and I guess agreement makes a decent enough bridge. Well, maybe it's a stretch, but... For each trial, he has to recall a specific moment about his mother, and then he can only move on to the next trial if he agrees to give up the memory. We can make it three different types of memories...
And write it in the form of a poem so we can at least do stuff like rhyme...
