Upon each nightstand sits a scroll of velvety black vellum, each bound with a siver ribbon and sealed with the King's seal. Those to whom they belong know instinctively which message is theirs, and it is to their hand, and no other, that the scrolls will first open.

Inside, the simple message is illuminated with designs of twining serpents in shining silver.

The first reads:

To Marla Mason, named here Cloak, of Ophiuchus,

Your oath is soon to be fulfilled, your actions judged, and your heart weighed. Have you served faithfully, chosen one? The time in which you may prove yourself grows short.

The second reads:

To Geddoe, named here Raiden, of Ophiuchus,

Your oath is soon to be fulfilled, your actions judged, and your heart weighed. Have you served faithfully, chosen one? The time in which you may prove yourself grows short.
