I'll be all right, father.

I will mourn grandmother my own way.

[because tears are sacred]

Nibs, I know you honor her teachings but this is not healthy. Do not hold back.

Come. Pay her your last respects.

[The funeral lasted well into the night. Those who could still walk went home. The others took up the floor and couches in their humble home]

[Everyone was sound asleep, except for Nibs. His footsteps were a little unsteady but the closer he got to the beach, the more the drunken haze lifted. By the time he arrived, he was feeling sober again. He scaled the boulders so he could sit up high and stared out at blackness. He was far from the port. The beach here too littered with natural rock formations to be good for any docking boats]

[Nibs wraps his coat closer around himself as he sat on the beach, lost in thought. His parents are worried that he is too reserved, that he wouldn't know how to feel. Their fears couldn't be farther from the truth.

His grandmother wasn't anyone special. But Nibs inherited and learned much from her. Like her, he was a natural Finder - a person who has the guidance of the spirits. She taught him how to use the gift. She also taught him the importance of emotions and words as they are sacred and powerful things. Tears, especially so.]

[He could not, would not, cry. It wasn't the right time for tears.]

[He shook himself out of his reverie and slowly got to his feet again, carefully placing his hand on the rock surface. Grandmother told him to search here after her passing.]

[He carefully climbed down the other side of the boulder and hopped over to another rock. He carefully circled the rock formation, letting invisible hands guide him. He soon came across a small crevice in the rock formation. Without hesitation, he reached in.]

[What he pulled out made him smile.

It was his sister's favorite hairtie. A chirup flew off with it last week and he hadn't been able to find it.

A final parting gift.

He looked to the dark sea and whispered]

May the Gentleman treat you well, grandmother.
