The sad thing about my job is, you know, I see so many houses every year-- I have to fix this person's roof or rebuild that person's wall after a flood-- I start to see the design strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to build anything permanent in the swamps, so everything tends to be done in a way that screams "good enough," and no better. And I can't help thinking, if it were my house, I'd do it this way, or that way ...

And then I remember that we live in a swamp and if the storms or the flooding doesn't get it, something else will, so what's the point on spending a lot of time and effort working on my dream house anyway?
