Oh, ah.

... I was trying to prevent the thief from getting to the... whatever it was that he was trying to steal... We were in an underground chamber filled with lasers, and he'd found the one safe route. But I flooded the chamber with a gas meant to cause drowsiness. If it had gone according to plan, he would have fallen asleep, and I could have captured him, but he was able to get my mask from me, which filtered out the gas, and instead I succumbed to the gas.
