[though, it sounds like the second one doesn't really sound like he has much confidence in the subject. shouldn't a teacher know what they're doing?]

Okay. Now watch, this is what I was trying to explain.

[when Hakuba goes to hit his staff, he drops his own staff out of the way. This also means that Hakuba no longer has anything to push against! if he was putting a lot of weight into the hit, he'll stumble. if he wasn't, then Emil quickly raises his staff up again, on the opposite side of Hakuba's, away from where it was hitting]

Um, see, that's what I was trying to explain. If your attacker is strong enough to succeed when they try and hit your staff away, you can use it against them, or at least make sure they don't manage to knock your staff away, either. I still don't know if that makes sense. . .
