That you're a... aah, I don't know if there's a word for it. Someone like Feathers. And Carly, who used to be on Orion-- she was from the same place you all were, too.

The thing you guys all have in common are that amazing hearing and that sense of... keeping count of time.

. . . Is it really that amazing?

Yeah! I mean, I'd have to stick my ear to that door to hear people talking inside, and you were just standing here.

It's more useful than you think. You can warn other people if something dangerous is coming, pick up on details about a place other people just can't... and knowing how much time's passed when we're working with a time limit for Games'd be really helpful, for example.

Mm . . . but things like that aren't as impressive as actually being able to fight.

...nah, I don't think being able to fight's all that impressive. There's more than enough people who can do it, and it just takes practice.

No . . . I think it is. It takes a lot of courage to be able to put yourself in danger like that and to be willing. And skill and determination . . . An ordinary person wouldn't be able to do it at all. It only seems like there's a lot here because this place draws that kind of person. Someone who can swallow their fear and uncertainty and take it all on. And even among those people some of us are still too afraid to do anything. We can only stand by and watch everyone else go rushing into danger just hoping to win.

* ...shakes his head *

Fear and uncertainty... getting past those has nothing to do with the hope of winning, most times.

That time in Flowers' game; do you remember why you did what you did?

. . . Because no one else was going to. She was . . . She was so afraid and no one was going to do anything, so I— It was all I could do.

And you did it. That took courage, and determination.

And I think that's all it really takes. Real fighting... it's not the part where you run at danger with metal in your hand. It's the part where you beat down the fear enough to make the first step. Whether it's because you wanna protect someone, or make things right, or... just do something.

I'm a pretty cowardly guy, to be honest. But if someone else's life or heart's on the line... I can't afford to sit by and do nothing, either. It's just a plus sometimes that having the skill of waving a sword around comes in handy.

I wasn't really . . . I was shaking the whole time. And even if I was, if I had your skill then maybe I could've done something more. I only got Jim hurt too doing things the way I was.

...the game needed people to be hurt one way or another; my skill wouldn't have changed that fact. It would've probably just kept the fighting going longer.

My choices would've boiled down to the same as yours. And Jim would've still been hurt, too.
