Tripping and Meeting
Characters: Becka and Mazie Setting: The Courtyard, about 1:30pm
After getting all the racing thoughts out in her journal, she'd grabbed a spare blanket from her wardrobe, wandered down to the library to find a book. It really was a well stocked library, and rather than get distracted trying to go through all the books to find a new one, she grabbed an old favorite in the classics section and went on out to the courtyard. She spread the blanket out and laid down on her stomach on it. Propping herself up on her elbows, she opened the book and began to read, toeing her sandals off within minutes.
Mazie had originally ventured down to the kitchen for food, got coffee and no food, and made it back to her room after the interlude with the good doctor. And now she was cursing herself for not getting any food, considering that was her original plan anyway. Annoyed that she had to leave the computer again, she was back down in the courtyard, mumbling to herself. "Why the hell is my room so far away from the damn kitchen?" She was not paying attention to the people around her, to anything around her really, just storming off toward the kitchen. Until she tripped directly over a big person-shaped obstacle in the courtyard and fell right to the ground. "The fuck?!"
Becka was enjoying her book, getting sucked into it just like every other time she’d read it, and she really had read this one more times than she should probably admit to. She was so engrossed in the book that she didn’t hear the mumbling of the person approaching, but she definitely felt the being tripped over thing. She let out a surprised sound, dropping the book and looking around for whoever had tripped over her, quickly spotting the blonde woman who she’d tried not to stare at last night with Autumn sprawled out on the ground. “Are you all right?” she asked, worry clear in her tone as she scrambled to her knees to move over to her.
"God dammit!" Mazie gave a frustrated sound, flopping around onto her back to just stare up at the sky for a minute. Why the hell couldn't she just get some damn food in this place? Looking up at the girl who was calling out to her, Mazie pushed herself up onto her elbows. "I'm fine," She snapped, but had to slow down and try to remind herself that this wasn't this girl's fault nor would her new friends be very happy with her if she just screamed at some poor girl. "Sorry," She said, shaking her head as she sat up fully. "Fine, are you ok? Didn't mean to...trip over you or whatever."
The other woman seemed pretty peeved, Becka thought with a moment’s hesitation, her earlier worries all flooding back. She bit her lip, torn between wanting to help and wondering if this might be a situation she’d be better to walk away from, but then the woman was apologizing and asking after her, and she nodded mutely. Clearing her throat, she tried a hesitant smile. “I’m all right,” she said automatically. Her ribs were smarting a bit, but that would fade in a minute or two, she was sure. “You’re friends with Autumn, right?” She was kind of trying to reconcile the cute scene she’d noticed last night with this clearly agitated version of the blonde.
Mazie watched the girl, tilted her head a little bit as she nodded a little. "Hey, there's a doctor here who's gonna do check up's tomorrow but maybe we should go hunt him down now and make sure you're ok?" The most she had was some grass stains on her pants and her hands. When she brought up Autumn, Mazie watched her quizzically for a moment. "Yeah, I'm friends with Autumn. You know her too?" Should she be finding out more about this girl?
Becka laughed at the suggestion, shaking her head. “I’m a nurse, so no need to track Cal down,” she answered. She hadn’t actually met Cal yet, but she did know that he was the doctor of the group. “I’m really okay. My ribs are just tiny bit sore, but that’s gonna fade off soon, don’t worry,” she assured her. Becka shook her head slightly. “Not really, I just met her briefly last night, and we’ve talked a little on those journal things. I’m Becka,” she introduced herself, shifting off her knees to sit back.
Mazie sighed and shook her head. “Damn me and my big ass feet. Sorry...” She said, trying to give the girl another apology. She really hadn’t meant to run into her and although she would have liked to leave it at that, get up and get herself some food, she was trying to be more social. Even if part of her was concerned a bit about why there was an automatic connection brought up about Autumn and what that meant with this girl’s thoughts. Becka... “You’re Adam’s friend?” She asked, making the with why Autumn was brought up around her. It made sense now, someone who knew someone else, not necessarily someone she might need to keep her eyes on.
Becka waved off the apology again. “It’s okay, really,” she insisted, hoping that the girl would believe it this time. She seemed to be thinking about something, and when she asked about Adam, Becka smiled a little more widely. “Yeah, I guess you could say that,” she answered, a fond note to her tone. “We’ve hung out a little, played some video games a little bit ago. He’s a sweetie.” So yes, she did really like Adam so far, and she’d never been good at hiding her feelings, so it was clear in her expression and tone. “What was your name?” she asked curiously when she realized that the woman hadn’t offered it up.
Becka had played video games with Adam, that was nice. “What games are here?” She asked, honestly having not even gone to the activities room considering her computer wasn’t there. “Anything good?” She asked as she turned to Becka again. And then the girl asked for her name and Mazie realized she hadn’t given it yet. “Sorry, Mazie. I’m Mazie.”
Becka tilted her head as she tried to remember which games had been there that they hadn’t played. “Umm, there’s a little variety, but it’s not the best selection I’ve ever seen. We played a baseball one and a racing one, though. I didn’t really look through all of them,” she explained apologetically. She was sure, though, that she would become better acquainted with them. She smiled when Mazie introduced herself. “Mazie, that’s cute, unusual, I like it,” she decided. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Mazie listened, trying to place what a baseball one and a racing one could mean. “What console were they on? Do you know?” She asked, not meaning for it to sound condescending, just instead a question as to whether Becka did know what console they were on. “Thanks,” She said about her name. “Not as weird as my first one, so I’ll take it. I like Mazie. I hate the rest of my name. Is Becka your first name?”
“Umm, XBox, I think. There were a couple consoles up there, though,” Becka answered. Yeah, she could recognize the different consoles, but she’d paid less attention to the game and more attention to the company, so even though she was pretty sure they’d played the XBox, she couldn’t be completely positive. She wanted to ask what her first name was, but she’d said she hated it, so she didn’t think it would be nice to ask. “Yeah. Well, actually it’s Rebekah, but people rarely call me that cause there are just so many nickname opportunities with it. I don’t mind, though,” she said with a friendly smile.
Yes. There was an XBox here and that meant words of good news for Mazie. Smiling more, she nodded to the girl. “An XBox is great stuff. Rebekah is nice. Pretty name.” Finally standing up, Mazie brushed off her clothes and looked back Becka’s way. “Didn’t mean to disrupt your..reading time. I was just heading to the kitchen for a sandwich.” She almost turned to walk but then remembered she needed to be nice, even if she was considering this pretty nice anyway. “...Do you want to come too?”
Becka was amused by just how pleased Mazie looked at there being an XBox here, but some people were really enthusiastic about their gaming systems, so maybe she was just one of those types. “Thanks, I like it,” she said with a soft giggle. Becka made a little ‘ahhing’ sound when Mazie explained where she’d been heading. “Oh! No thanks, I just ate a little bit ago, but maybe next time?” she offered. Mazie seemed distracted, almost like she’d been in a hurry, so even if her instinct would have been to go along and chit chat, she didn’t want to keep her.
“Uh...sure, next time,” She said. What had she done? Did she say something that made that Becka not want to go to the kitchen with her? Mazie didn’t understand. Maybe she’d bring it up to Autumn or Adam. Nodding, she tucked her hands into her pockets and smiled. “See you around then.”
