Evan walked away, though it was at a slow pace, hands shoved into his pockets. He got a view of out the door, though it wasn't as close to it as he had been. He just half sat against a desk. "He getting any better with it? Is it something that you can work at over time?" he asked. There was a firm lockdown inside his head, and he was focusing on the issue at hand now.
Why were they talking about this? All Edan could think about was Evan moving farther away from her, closer to that damn door, which had her pulling her knees towards her chest, doing her best to stay as modest as possible in the dress. “Why do you care?”
Evan shrugged. "There some reason I shouldn't?" he posed, instead of actually answering. Or, it was a form of an answer. He glanced back at her, then let his gaze settle there. She was doing that vulnerable thing again. "Obviously it's an issue. If you're willing to hang out with someone you know has personally wiped five people off of the map, because he can help you up after you fall...that's a problem, sweetheart." he told her, voice actually lacking much bite. "So, I'm asking."
“That’s not why I’m willing to hang out with you Evan. I like being around you because of you not because of what he can’t do,” Edan said shaking her head. “You already said you weren’t going to kill me so fuck the rest. I just like you.” And she’d called him by his real name. Again. He wasn’t going to like that either. Shaking her head a little she shrugged. “Yes and no. Some days, yes, others...it’ll be years.”
Evan was pretty sure she'd said it clearly enough a few minutes ago, and he was positive he wasn't going to be forgetting that any time soon. So, she might have denied it, but he wasn't sure whether or not he bought it. She sounded sincere. "Asher." he corrected absently, before he debated what to say after that. "If it bugs you that much, find someone else." Evan told her. "If it's something you're starved for already, then waiting out years? That's...probably not going to be a doable thing."
“Asher. Whatever. It’s stupid.” Her voice was a little short with him on that point, but at the same time she wondered if he’d tell her ‘good girl’ again. Probably not. She also didn’t want to think about why she might want him to in the first place. “What are you offering?” It was blurted before she thought it through then waved it off, trying to take it back. “No. Not...nevermind. It’s not a big deal.”
"What's stupid?" he asked, but dropped it as she...well. Kind of utterly confused him. He stared at her, one eyebrow arched. "...Okay how about you start over, and use real, complete thoughts that make sense when put together?" he suggested. "What do you mean what am I offering?" he asked. Since he didn't know that he'd offered anything. "And ...yeah, just try that again."
“The name thing. I like your real name better. I think you just like hearing me say it.” Edan rubbed her hands over her face, wincing at the bruise under her eye, knowing it was showing more as she rubbed the makeup off. She forced herself to take a few slow breaths then shook her head. “I was thinking maybe you were offering to be the someone else. But I know better and it was more just what I was saying. It’s not a big deal. It’s not even a thing.” She didn’t think. It was hard to define when it was two kisses that Matt hadn’t even made an effort to recreate. “I shouldn’t have brought it up. It wasn’t really what you were asking.”
"Yeah, well, it's my name, and I get to say what I want to identify myself with." Evan told her. Whether one was better or not, it wasn't really the point. It was an identity thing. It was another way to keep people distant, and he'd kinda fucked up with her in the first place, telling her his first name. It had just kind of happened. And while he couldn't take it back, he could at least attempt to get her to use the preferred one. He was quiet before he answered everything else. "Seems like a thing to me." he told her honestly. "And, doesn't matter if that wasn't what I was asking. It's what you said. So..." he trailed off. So it was out there. So it was her answer. It was relevant, whether or not it had been what he'd been looking for as an answer. He wasn't going to dismiss it just because.
