Characters: Autumn and Hannah
Setting: Second floor balcony, Activity room
Autumn was leaving her room, walking along the walkway not quite sure where she was headed yet, possibly the library, when she saw a girl ahead. She was pretty sure it was the girl she was meant to meet up with that day, and she smiled, waving. "Hey," she called. "Hannah?"
Having headed off to make her way to the activity room as she told Becka she’d do, Hannah had managed to find her way in the right direction for once. She had gotten about halfway through the apple by the time she neared the doorway to the activity room and bit into it once more before she heard a voice call out to her.
Stopping dead in her tracks, she looked around her, holding on to the coffee by the bottom of the mug and spotting another woman looking in her direction. “Yes?” she said after swallowing, a little taken aback by the call.
Autumn smiled, hopefully looking as disarming as possible. "I'm Autumn...we were meant to meet up today?" she suggested, hoping the other girl had gotten the message too. "I didn't mean to startle you." she added, if that was what she'd done. All she did know was Hannah looked kind of thrown. She also looked about twelve.
“Oh,” Hannah replied, a little dumbfounded but only by the suddenness of their meeting. “Yeah, I meant to message you about that, but I got a little hungry... and then I guess I had forgotten.” She was thankfully in a more stable of mood for once. It was strange how it worked, all things considered. “It’s ok though... I was just heading to the activity room to see if they had any movies in there.” A little bit of an awkwardness overcame her, but she did her best not to fall into it.
"It's fine, I'd been planning to message you too, but here we are." she said. "And I could always help you look." she added. "Though, you know there's movies and tv shows and stuff available in your room, right?" she asked, just to put that out there first. It would be a shame for the girl to waste time, when she had access to what she wanted already.
Nodding Hannah let Autumn catch up with her before moving on. “Yeah,” she said, “Actually Becka and I were thinking of getting a few people together so we could all just sort of watch something. So I was hoping to find a few things in there. A room is too small for more than a couple people to really enjoy it I guess.”
"We could always ask the powers that be for a projector, and a screen." Autumn suggested, following along to the activity room. "Honestly a movie night sounds pretty awesome." she added. "Make a bunch of popcorn, maybe get some sweets in there. Could be a great time. A little possible date night for people, should they be inclined, and if not? Just a fun time."
Giving a friendly smile, Hannah thought back to what Becka had said about keeping it small. Though she didn’t want to shut anyone down, it would have been nice. Even so, at least this way she would get a better handle on herself in a large group. “Yeah, that sounds like a good idea,” she said, “But a date night?” She questioned that part with great concern. “People date here?” But who was she to judge after last night.
"People date." Autumn confirmed. "Or, sort of, I suppose. I know there are definitely people who are cozy." Like her. And Mazie. "Maybe not that many, considering how early it is in the program. But people make connections. It's human nature."
Taking a healthy sip of her coffee, Hannah shrugged a little. “Human nature is surprisingly betraying,” she mused, thinking back to the countless times she had witness a man or woman plead for their life by taking their spouse’s. “But I guess you’re right,” she added, moving into the activity room. “Would you come?” Hanna questioned, feeling a little awkward at the idea of swelling the attendance to the get together, but hiding it by a bite of her apple.
Autumn raised an eyebrow as she looked at Hannah. "Have you been betrayed yourself?" she asked. That seemed like one hell of a cynical outlook, considering how young she looked. "As for if I would come, I suppose if it happened, or somesuch. I guess it would depend on when it was, and what might be going on with it."
It was an extremely awkward question for Hannah and it showed in her expression. She threw the rest of her apple in the garbage can as she came around the doorway, taking a few steps ahead from Autumn. Her appetite had diminished almost instantly. “Well there are a few things to work out first, I guess,” she replied, ignoring that first question altogether. “Do you date here?” Shifting the focus was something she was good at.
It was difficult not to notice both the reaction and the utter disregard of the question. Right. Autumn thought to herself. "Something like that." she said. "I would consider myself 'taken'." she amended slightly.
Turning her attention completely on to Autumn, Hanna rose her brow. “Taken?” she questioned, looking the faintest bit concerned. “Would you mind telling me about him? I’m curious, you know, how one could be so drawn to another quickly and without caution in a place of wolves,” she carried no condescending tone, only a sincerity in her curiosity, “I mean it must take an immense amount of trust. Are you comfortable with that?” She was just too out of touch with the real world, if that was what one might call the place, to understand the makings of relationships.
"...I wouldn't say it's 'without caution', that's kind of a big assumption." Autumn said first, finding it a little odd. Sure, it was a short timeframe, but her and Mazie hadn't even been intimate yet. So far, they were taking things very slowly, and it wasn't like she jumped in blind. "And it's not a him, it's a her." she added, smiling. "A beautiful blonde with long wavy hair. She's got little tattoos along her neck and shoulder." she said, indicating where Mazie's tattoos were. "As for trust, I get a good feeling from her. We talk a lot, share a lot. When something kind of crazy happened, and someone tried to hurt me, Mazie was right there to punch the guy. She wanted to protect me." she said, a fond smile on her lips.
Hannah nodded a little as she listened. “I don’t mean to sound rude by questioning it,” she assured, offering a little smile to mark her sincerity, “I just don’t understand the way of these things at all.” She turned to walk closer toward the television at the far end of the room. Her thoughts got lost in distant memories of before her abduction.
“The last time I ever dated was a boy in the ninth grade,” she recalled, “I was still in the eighth so he was a year older than I was.” Her hand reached to the top of the flat screen, dragging her fingertips along it as she moved slowly, looking among the various games and shelves nearby. “He was always very kind to me but we were so young. How was I supposed to know that someone else I trusted would take me from him.” She laughed lightly, “I wonder where he is now and what he’s doing... even what he might look like.”
Hannah turned back, facing in Autumn’s direction. “So we should always be careful, but if you enjoy it, then enjoy every moment with her.”
Autumn had been going to comment on the young thing, but in the end, she didn't, instead listening to the rest. It definitely drew up red flags, and she watched the other girl closely, even if she didn't appear to be scrutinizing. She merely looked attentive, even if she was now sharply tuned in to what Hannah was saying. "Someone else you trusted took you from him?" she asked, that definitely indicating a story. The way it was worded was...strange. She didn't say anything more, in order to give Hannah room to fill things in herself. Autumn didn't want to put assumptions out there.
Deciding that her search for hard copies of movies was futile, Hannah gave her full attention to Autumn. The question was a bit too personal, but Hannah had been the one to open that can of worms in the first place. “I knew a man who was very sweet to everyone in our little town. I had grown up with always knowing him,” she explained, moving around the sofa in the room to sit on the back of it, “One day he took me away. No one ever suspected a thing of him. He was quite skilled at pretending, you see.” Even she would never have thought that he would have done what he did. Of course she knew him all too well now. “He was quite skilled at a lot of awful things, actually. Who would have thought the man in the front row at church who helped anyone and everything was such a...” She had no word for it now. “And so you see, you can’t trust anyone so easily, no matter what they say or do for you.”
So, yes. This just got one hell of a lot darker, and about a billion times creepier. Autumn watched her as she spoke, clear sympathy in her eyes. God, what had happened to this girl? What sort of abuse and horrors? Nothing good, that was for damn sure. How did she wind up here? Shouldn't she be someplace else?
What struck her as well was just how sad it was. That someone that young would have trust shattered like that, clearly to the point where she couldn't trust anyone now. "I'm sorry that happened to you." she told her, voice gentle. She had more to say, but didn't. She wanted to tell Hannah that not everyone was that man. That one person who was a sick fuck didn't mean everyone in the world was. But while true, she could imagine Hannah would never believe it. Not in a million years, and she couldn't blame her.
Hannah shook her head slightly, closing her eyes for a moment as she heard that word sorry echo in her mind. Each was a different voice. “I’m not telling you to be sorry for me,” she admitted, standing from her place on the sofa and approaching Autumn. She placed her hand on the woman’s shoulder gently. “I just want you to be safe and remember that we’re not in our home towns where others can betray you unexpectedly. We’re in a place where being betrayed here is simply something we should expect. We’re all criminals for one reason or another. Lying and pulling the wool over one another is simply practice for some.”
She withdrew the hand and then walked by her. “I’m sorry, but I need to go now,” she announced softly. A curtain of bad memories screamed at her to run and hide. She hid the reaction well with poise, choosing to hold the facade of complete concern when deep down, she ached with her own fears. The reminder was every bit for herself as it was for Autumn.
Autumn watched Hannah's eyes as she spoke, still not sure how to handle this, really. It was making her uneasy, even if she still managed to cover it very well. Autumn was very good at covering anything that made her uncomfortable. Her profession had often depended on it on some level. She watched the blonde as she walked away, wanting to say more, but it was clear Hannah was ending this meeting. So she remained silent, not wanting to say it had been nice to meet her, when it was clear it had been strange, not 'nice'. It also jarred against the subject matter to be cheerful and smile and nod, like they hadn't just discussed dark things. In the end she nodded, allowing for Hannah to leave first.
