get it rolling
Characters: Jae and Mazie
Setting: Mazie's room
Jae finally spotted the blonde, and headed up to her when it looked like she might be headed towards the kitchen. "Hey." she said, to catch her attention. "Lady Fisticuffs, got a minute?" she asked, keeping her voice down at least a little bit.
Well, the day was already shaping up to be the strangest one she'd had in a while, so yeah, maybe a surprisingly quiet conversation with Jae was something that was normal today. "Uh..yeah, sure." She had intended to grab some snacks, but that could wait for now. "So..guessing not here, right?"
Jae gave a smile. "Not here." she confirmed. "Your room or mine. Pick one." she offered, already having a bit of a plan in place. So, all Mazie had to do was choose where she'd be more comfortable.
"Mine," Mazie said instantly. She had an immediate idea that maybe Jae had found out about the anonymous posting she'd enabled and wanted to know how to do it. If that was the case, she'd happily be able to show her and feel more safe doing so in her own room.
Heading back towards the stairs, Mazie decided to settle the best she could with some chit chat while they walked. "So..thanks for putting that journal post up about Caroline. It's good people know now."
"I figured someone had to do it, and no one else jumped on it yet, so...whatever. People shouldn't find shit out like that over dinner." Jae said, shrugging. "But you're welcome, I suppose. I just wonder what they're going to do with her. If they'll come for her body or tomorrow we're going to be discussing fun options like 'do we bury her on the farm, or try and shove her into a freezer'."
Usually, the insensitivity didn’t get to her, but for some reason Mazie was having a hard idea with the image of Caroline in the freezer or buried in the farm. She hadn’t even known the girl and that might be what was throwing her for the biggest loop, why she even seemed to care so much when she hadn’t really met her to begin with. “I requested that The Man send her back to her family. No one should have to be put to rest here, it’s just wrong.” Leading her up to the second floor, Mazie headed for her room and unlocked the door, then stood to the side to let Jae in. “I guess I’m supposed to be embarrassed that my room is messy or whatever, but I’m not really so telling you that I am sort of feels lame.”
"I would really hope they'd do that without a prompt from us, but I'm glad you said something." Jae said. She walked into Mazie's room, not giving a damn about the state of it. "Sweetie, you could be a crazy hoarder and I wouldn't actually care." She headed straight through the room and went into the bathroom. Once inside she turned the faucet on and stepped into the tub. She pulled the curtain, crooking her finger to the blonde.
“Yeah, I hoped the human decency part of them would come forth, but I can’t count on it so I figured it couldn’t hurt to remind them that there are people here, not test subjects.” Mazie said, closing the door after Jae. She watched the woman curiously and when Jae stepped into the tub, with her clothes still on, Mazie was exceedingly confused. Had she missed something? Was Jae...into chicks? She didn’t know the woman but this was definitely not a situation she expected herself to get into. Confused, Mazie headed into the bathroom and stared at Jae for a minute, stepping into the tub out of sheer curiosity and ‘benefit of the doubt’ feelings. “...so...we need to be in the shower why? Because I gotta tell you, I’m kinda...thinking this is real weird right now.”
"People and test subjects are not mutually exclusive." Jae said under her breath, not really trying to argue, just believing that one didn't mean they couldn't be the other in the eyes of those in charge. "Noise cancellation with the water, and less chance we'll be spotted with a camera here." she said, voice very low. "Which brings me to my purpose. I want to know how to post anonymously and I want to know if you can break into the camera system."
Oh. Ok, now she was on board. Mazie listened, leaning in to hear Jae and nodded. “The anonymous posting stuff is actually pretty easy. I can show you better than I can tell you, so we’ll block the cameras with our backs and we’ll write to communicate or something. Long story short, you just log into a separate account that I set up, one they don’t have access to, and post that way.” It was great to hear that the word was getting around. That’s what Mazie had hoped for to begin with.
“The cameras...that’s a little trickier but hell, I’d love to get control of them.” It was kind of a pipe dream, getting control of the cameras, but with what she’d been able to get done so far, she was hoping she might actually have a chance at it. Plus there was now another person here she needed to talk to about this kind of stuff, maybe he had some skills in this too. “It might come in stages though. Control of the movements first, but I once I have that it’ll be easier to get control and turn them off. That’s what you’re thinking, right?”
"That's what I'm thinking." Jae confirmed. "I want to know what happens. I want to know if anything happens. Basically? I want to know just how fucked we are. I figure that's the fastest possible way to find out."
She was right. It was the fastest way to figure out how fucked they were. It was also the fastest way for Mazie to make some enemies around here, but no one had to know, right? Just like no one really knew that she had her hands on their private journal entries too. It came with the territory sometimes, stumbling across secrets and confessions, but she'd done her part. She'd let them know that those journals weren't private…if the Administration using them as a way to log their feelings wasn't already an invasion of privacy. "So once I get access to these cameras, I can trust you as a viewer? Do we need to have the Peter Parker talk?"
"Nope. Don't need the talk. My interest here is to test the waters, and maybe do threat assessments." Jae told her, deciding to be upfront on that. "I think there are people here that really don't belong here. Or anywhere."
"Threat assessments." That sounded legit. And she didn't seem like she was bullshitting her. "So what's the information going to get you in the end? Threat assessments, yes, but you find out someone who doesn't deserve to be here and..then what? Because I'm not exactly ok with my being an accomplice to murder or something."
"Not looking to kill anyone. Not unless I have to." Jae said. "Threat assessments means I keep an eye out. That's all. Find out who needs to be kept a closer watch on, and do it. Just in case." she said. "Got one more question. Do you know how to crack the privacy settings? Do you know what it is that Ryan and Caroline did? I don't believe Ryan for even a second. And Caroline...before she did her swan dive, she hadn't said shit. I want to know what they were punishing--just to know if shit was random or not. If they had a reason for Ryan being in there for far longer, or whatnot. If there's no word, fine. But it just will help fill in the blanks. There are too fucking many of them right now."
She did agree with that. The lack of answers was driving her nuts and she didn't enjoy being treated like her concerns and opinions weren't exactly important enough to be warranted. "I don't know yet, but I can work on that. Probably get that sooner than the cameras." She was starting to like Jae more and more, once she was able to get past the initial suspicion she had. "I'm in. I'll work on it and get back to you with some answers soon as I have them. You're right, though. We deserve to know what the fuck is going on and these people aren't giving us shit. Hey, what do you think we should do about those stocks? I was all for dismantling them and finding our own form of punishment, maybe more fair or something…"
"No idea, honestly. For now, maybe leave them. See if this becomes a regular thing, or if they're doing it once then forgetting it. I was thinking of putting up a post, seeing how people felt about some sort of...enforcement. Self policing." Jae said, shaking her head. "I think we have a few people here who could fuck up everyone, and a lot of people here who would do very badly in a confrontation. I don't like the odds."
The stocks didn't seem like they were a one time thing but she couldn't ever really be sure and that was what was freaking her out about this place. The uncertainty. However, the self policing…that wasn't an awful idea. She instantly thought of Autumn and Adam, people who she would put on the side of those who might not want to protect themselves, and people like Ryan and some of the others that were starting shit everywhere, apparently. And then Brady, who had apologized but still could snap at any moment. "…I like it. I'm for it. Maybe if we do this and show The Man that we're not completely animals, they'll not push someone so hard that they try to escape and end up dying in the process." Mazie looked at Jae again and nodded. "Count me in."
Jae gave Mazie a grim sort of half smirk. "Glad to have you on board." she told her. "We'll be in touch. Til then, let me know if you do see someone that you figure is a threat. Makes things easier, if I have more than one person keeping an eye out."
"You got it, General." Mazie nodded a little, thinking that this might work. Jae seemed like a no-nonsense kind of woman and Mazie appreciated that. She didn't have time for bullshit and apparently this place was getting worse and worse, so neither did anyone else. "And you keep your ears open for anyone that might have some computer skills like mine. It'll be helpful too. Pretty soon, we'll have ourselves a little task force. They should have really thought harder about who they put in here if they were looking for people to just sit down and take it."
Internally, Jae felt a sharp, bitter pang. She'd been part of a task force before. Back in the real world, before it had all turned to curdled shit. Mazie couldn't know that, of course. Couldn't know she had just stomped on a nerve, and Jae gave no indication that anything was wrong. She was good at playing her part, after all. And her part right now was 'chick setting things in motion to get shit done'. So that was exactly who she was going to be. "I will." she promised. "Talk to you soon."
Mazie shook her head, stepping out of the tub. "Not before I show you the secret," She said, nudging her head towards the main room where her computer was set up. Jae could leave whenever she wanted, but Mazie was at least going to get her set up on how to post anonymously. After that, Mazie had some work to do.
Right. Things to do. Miles to go before she slept, all that bullshit. She moved out to the main room to get this down, and after that, she'd maybe take just five minutes to herself for quiet time. She could put her ghosts to bed for the time being (not that they were ever that far) and get on with it.
