Sticky Fingers
Characters: Caroline and OPEN (or could be a solo if she doesn't get caught!)
Setting: Just outside Becka's room, pre-dawn
She shouldn't have, she knew she shouldn't have. Yet, it had been so easy.
Caroline had not been sleeping well. Everything felt wrong. This place - it wasn't prison, yet it was not freedom either. When she had been in prison, she had lived from one moment to the next and every time she set a foot wrong, someone had been there to firmly push her back in place. It had been hell, but it had been hell with certainty. She had had no choice, no real responsibility for things.
Not like here. Here there were open doors. Personal possessions. Nobody who was going to do anything. There was an awareness that they were actually being watched. That there were cameras everywhere, even if she couldn't see them. Yet, it was an awareness that was fading seemingly by the hour. Nobody else really looked. Not really.
The twitches had been enough to get her out of bed in the middle of the night. She'd needed to take a walk. Maybe head to the kitchen. Possibly to the bar to drink herself into a dreamless sleep.
She hadn't even realised that she was trying door handles until she was already inside the room of her next door neighbour. And when she realised it was empty...
A couple of hours. That was how long she had been in there. She had searched it from head to toe, just because she could.
In the end, she had taken a blue tank top from a drawer. She couldn't leave empty handed. She just couldn't. The thought had almost had her breaking out into a sweat. That was when she knew things were bad. All her promises to herself - that she would do whatever it took, be whoever they wanted her to be. They all disappeared in the predawn light as she quietly left the room, the top tucked under her shirt. Not her finest work, but she was coming to realise, she was desperate.
