The moments of silence had actually helped to calm her for the moment. She knew he wasn't ignoring her, just choosing his words carefully. However, when he did turn to her and spoke, the anger returned tenfold.
"You were never a real man to begin with, so it's good to hear you changed in that respect. Last I checked, I was here first. And trust me, if I was plannning to ruin your life, you sure as hell wouldn't be standing right here. So maybe you need to back the fuck up." She stared him down but didn't dare step back.
"You look like shit, by the way." The last bit wasn't a jab, and surprisingly it wasn't even delivered that way. Her tone, for the brief moment, had the levity and playfulness that had attracted him once.
