He gave a light half smile. "I've never really believed in anything like a higher power." he admitted. As far as he could tell, it was all a bunch of bullshit. He did, however, nod at her suggestion. He didn't figure he'd really do that, but he got the concept. If he tried to sit down and list the reasons he loved Meg, he'd be at it all day. There was a reason he'd gone from having a relatively stable life to having one that was filled with utter chaos. He'd chosen her over everything else in the entire world.
"Don't be too hard on her for hitting me." he added, sighing slightly as he propped his un-slapped cheek on his hand. "You react how you were brought up to react, and that's how anger was expressed in her household." he said, voice very quiet again. There was that light undercurrent to it that betrayed it still bothered him. Even if the guy who'd abused her was long dead, it still bothered him on a very real level. "Besides, she's like, four pounds sopping wet and pocket sized. She can do some real damage, but she's never done it to me." Nothing past some bruises, and not all of those were due to anything bad.
