"I'm not mad, just...confused." Especially by the handiwork of what Kyle had made. He knew his door, that jumped out at him, still holding Kyle's hand but reaching out with his free hand to trace the lines. "I...how long have you been planning this?" Adam breathed, pushing his mask up and off his eyes so he could see properly.
"For as long as you've been convinced I've been keeping something from you?" Kyle suggested. "Me and Wren. Following on from the whole dragon slayer thing. She even has a dragon for you to rescue her from," he added, spilling that as well, worried that Adam was going to take this all badly. They'd known it was a possibility, and it hadn't really been meant to come out like this.
"This is what you've been hiding? You've made me a real dragon slayer?" Adam's voice was full of disbelief. No one had ever done anything like this for him beyond his grandmother and for as great as she was, she hadn't had the knack for grandeur that Kyle did. His voice was quiet, amazed. He wasn't upset. Shocked but not upset.
Kyle nodded. "I had to keep it all in my bathroom. You're around quite a lot you know," he said with a tentative smile. Adam had said he wasn't mad, and he didn't sound upset, but Kyle still wasn't sure how things were going to land. You didn't have to be angry to be uncomfortable with something, after all. "Actually, it's a good job the masquerade came along, or else I would have ended up having to convince you to wear armour made of aluminum foil or something," Kyle said, the joke coming out rather lame, given his sudden spike of nerves.
"You say that like me being around is bad," Adam said, echoing Kyle's smile with one of his own. "Foil? For what? Just because?"
"You know I don't think being around you is a bad thing, except when you're stayed the night and I'm wondering if you're going to want to have a shower or not," Kyle said, twitching a smile. "And foil because I don't really have any other way of making armour and, even if I did, I don't actually really have the skills to do it well."
Adam shook his head. "You probably don't have to worry about that. I like the safety of my own shower." The showers had been a bad place for him in prison. "No, why in general? Did you do any of it?"
"Because Wren and I both wanted you to see yourself the way we see you," Kyle said, giving the hand he was still holding a squeeze. "As this wonderful man that's worth so much more than he thinks he is. Whose every dream deserves to come true - no matter how out there it seems when he says it. You wanted to be a dragon slayer? Then you are going to be a dragon slayer. And I, for one, will move heaven and earth to make sure that happens for you. As long as you'll let me do that."
And Kyle wanted to say friends. Adam was very aware of how much that entire thing earned him being kissed and he was inching in before he stopped himself and bit his lip instead. "Thank you," he managed, voice shakier than he would have liked. No one had done anything of the sort for him. Jeffrey had said things like that, but he'd never followed through. Kyle had already followed through. "I'd hug but you're covered in paint, though you deserve more than just a hug."
"Yeah, you're not allowed to spoil the look. I spent a long time on this," Kyle told him. "But... You can buy me a drink?" he suggested. It was a departure for Kyle, who had so far refused alcohol round anyone. Yet tonight was different. Tonight he was allowing himself to let go.
Adam raised an eyebrow at that. "Drink? I mean yes, but really?" It just meant he'd be keeping an eye on Kyle more, to make sure he didn't get too drunk.
"Tonight's about having fun, right?" Kyle asked.
"Well, yeah. I guess it is." Though Adam knew better. He'd have a different focus. Which was fine. He'd let Becka walk into a trap when she got drunk, even if he hadn't known, but the same wouldn't happen to Kyle. So the knight would protect his angel. He squeezed Kyle's hand once more before letting go and claiming his shield and sword, testing them both before posing for approval.
