Apologies
Who: Mazie and Kyle
When: Afternoon
Where: Courtyard
Mazie needed to get to this. She didn’t need to sit around and find an excuse not to find him because she didn’t really have one at this point. Trudging down to the courtyard, she glanced around for a moment before spotting Kyle and coming up to him. She was this close to launching into the apology the same way that she had launched into the attack, but she stopped herself short and instead cleared her throat. “Hello,” She said, trying to start there, trying to start somewhere that normal people started when they apologized.
Kyle looked round and, spotting it was Mazie, purposefully stopped himself from over-reacting. Instead he fell back on years of living in high class New York society. He lifted his chin a little and gave her a haughty and disdainful look. “Yes?” he asked her, not stopping in placing strings of little lights in the tree he was working on.
Great. That was a look she didn't really get often. When people were mad where she came from, they definitely didn't look like that. Taking a breath to try and stabilize herself, Mazie watched Kyle. "I am here to say I'm sorry for the way I acted earlier."
Kyle considered her for a moment, then looked away, giving his full attention to weaving lights into the tree branches, his long fingers moving deftly as he worked. “Why?” he asked, eventually. he wasn’t just going to let her off the hook. He was mad at her, and more than that, she had tried to tell him how he should live his life. She’d hit upon very real issues that he had, and that made him vulnerable and paranoid about his own behaviour. He couldn’t just let himself capitulate. “Why are you sorry. Because you’re actually sorry? Or because your girlfriend told you to come and apologise to me?” He figured that was why she was here. After all, he’d pretty much demanded that Autumn take her in hand.
Mazie watched Kyle, actually pretty thankful he wasn't looking at her. It made this a hell of a lot easier. "Partially," She said, deciding to be honest because not being honest didn't ever really work for her. "But also because I know I didn't approach it great. And that I only had one side of the story. And that I jump to conclusions sometimes when I shouldn't." She ran her hand through her hair. "I'm not expecting to be friends or anything. I don't think we're getting out of this with hug or nothing, but I do think I owed you an apology."
Kyle didn’t speak for a few minutes, still seemingly giving his concentration over to decorating. In actual fact, he was considering what she said. Eventually, he sighed and gave up on his work, turning fully to her instead. “Just... Don’t say anything about this to Adam, okay?” he asked her. “Don’t... Say we talked. Don’t say that you thought that I was making the wrong decision. Don’t say that you thought we’d make a cute couple and in your opinion I’m crazy for not going for it or... whatever it is you’ve convinced yourself of, okay? It’s not fair if you do. So don’t. You’ll just hurt him in the long run and that’s the last thing I want. He’s been hurt enough by his friends. He doesn’t need you and I adding to that.”
Mazie let Kyle speak even if she had to bit her tongue to do it. This was not about her getting her two-cents in here, this was about her apologizing. Really apologizing and not just barking over it with another angry phrase. Why did Kyle make her so mad anyway? Sighing, she waited until he was done, eyebrows lifted as she spoke. "I wasn't going to bring this up to Adam. There wasn't a reason for me to do that..." And I'm not a tattletale... "I do hope you end up happy, with whatever the hell that means for you." She put her hands up. "But I'm out of it from now on."
“Then thank you,” Kyle told her. “I... I care about him a lot, you know. Even if you don’t think it’s in the right way. I want what’s best for him. I just know that, right now, that’s not me.” He took a breath and added, “And I don’t like people telling me what to do. Which has nothing to do with Adam, but has everything to do with you.”
Mazie had to force herself from spitballing off again, instead making another mark in the inside of her cheek as she listened to him. And she made herself think, really think, about telling someone what to do and how to live their life. And she realized that although it wasn't one specific person, a government of people had tried to tell her as much. And she'd told them all to screw off. "I'm sorry," She said, sounding more genuine this time. "Won't happen again." She never thought she'd have something in common with Kyle, but there it was. Small as it may be, it was there.
Kyle shrugged, but he kept his I know to himself. His idea of a peace offering: letting the subject drop. “So, did you find a costume that doesn’t involve wearing skirts?” he asked her, instead.
She hadn't expected a real conversation to come out of this so the confusion was probably there on his features. "Autumn picked me something without skirts. Which is good. Gonna be Kaylee, from Firefly..and Serenity. You ever watch that show?" She could talk about this for a while, but something told her maybe she needed to return the favor. "What's your costume?"
“Sorry - I must have missed that show,” Kyle said, shaking his head. He was drawing a blank - he had never even heard of it. “I’m sure you’ll be great though,” he offered. “I don’t know what I’m going as yet - I was going to go look at the costumes in a while. I’m not too worried about mine. I’ve been more... Planning Adam’s. Which hopefully Wren’s getting him set up with.” Assuming she was doing her part. He had faith in the girl.
Mazie shrugged, but internally she was a little disappointed. She'd always sort of hoped that people had just seen Firefly or Serenity, even if she knew that was farfetched. "If they have it on the computers, you should give it a watch. Even if you don't really like Sci-Fi, it's pretty cool for the characters." Listening, she ended up smiling at that. "What's Adam going as?"
Kyle nodded to the idea of the show she had recommended. He didn't know if he would actually watch it - he didn't watch a whole lot of anything, unless he was with company. Still, it was nice to have recommendations to fall back on if required. "Hopefully, Adam'll be going as a knight. With Wren as his princess. Don't tell him, but we'd had this whole thing that we were going to be convincing him of, and this would be kind of the introduction to that."
“Adam as a knight, Wren as a princess. You could be a mage, wizard guy. Or...a bard. If you wanted to be something similar to them.” She said, trying to think through what kind of medieval characters were in the fantasy books she’d read when she was younger. She closed her lips then lifted her hands to complete the ‘my lips are sealed’ motion. “I won’t tell Adam.” There seemed to be a lot of things in this conversation that she couldn’t tell Adam but a surprise costume was actually a pretty funny thing not to tell him.
"That's true," Kyle said. "I mean, part of me would like to stick to the theme. The other part of me... Kind of wonders if I should take a step back." He shrugged. "Like I said, I'm not trying to lead Adam on. I don't want to give him the wrong impression." Which meant that going as any kind of prince was very definitely out. "I did joke at one point that I could be all Monty Python and get a couple of coconuts to bang together," he joked.
“That would be funny but you could go as someone from Firefly with Autumn and me. There are lots of dudes in that show. A doctor, the captain, the pilot...I think the doctor or the captain though, if you want to. The captain wears really tight pants...Or the coconuts guy, I like that idea too.” Mazie ended up smiling a little more. “But maybe something different than something medieval would be best, for not leading anyone on.” Looking back at the decorations around him, she glanced back Kyle’s way. “You want some help with those?”
Kyle looked at her quizzically. “Did you really just suggest that I ought to choose my costume based on the tightness of the pants?” he asked her, laughing a little. “I’ll... bear that in mind. No promises,” he said, sounding that he wasn’t sure whether it was hilarious or whether he should just be really confused. “But, yeah - would love some help with the decorations,” he said. He felt a little better about this whole situation. Like maybe if he got to know Mazie a little better, this wouldn’t happen again. He didn’t want to be at odds with people here.
